Obituaries of Dr. James Thomas Chappell of Laurens Co., GA.
The son of Joseph John Chappell and Mary Hardin Lingo, he died December
22, 1899, in Dublin, Laurens Co., GA. He was the father of Judge Ira
Stanley Chappell. Clifton Thomas Chappell, Dr. Roy James Chappell, and
Vance Lingo Chappell.
>From "The Dublin Courier-Herald," Thursday, December 28, 1899:
IS NOW AT REST
"The city of Dublin was shocked on Friday afternoon when it was
announced a few minutes after 3 o'clock that Dr. James T. Chappell had
breathed his last.
"For some months he had been ill, but it was hoped that his strong
will would succeed in throwing off the malady which took him away, but it
was too deeprooted to be reached by medicine and careful nursing, and at
last his constitution gave way and his spirit winged its flight to the
realms of glory to enjoy the fruits of a well spent life.
"Dr. Chappell was born in Twiggs County, Georgia, September 10,
1830, and came from distinguished lineage, one of his ancestors, Capt.
Chappell, having been commander of the "Speedwell," the companion boat to
the "Mayflower." Dr. Chappell united himself with Poplar Spring Baptist
Church and at the time of his death was the oldest member of that church.
On October 18, 1855, he was married to Miss Harriet Athalia Stanley,
daughter of Ira Stanley. He left his widow and five sons to mourn his
demise.
"When the war between the states began, he joined the forces of
his native state and was elected Captain of Company G, 49th Georgia
regiment, which was later attached to Anderson's brigade, A. P. Hill's
corps, Hampton's legion. He was a brave soldier and with his company
participated in the battles of Seven Pines, Mechanicsville, Gaines' Mill,
Frazier's Farm, Cold Harbor, Cedar Run and Second Manassas. During this
last battle he was wounded and upon recovery was transferred to the
medical department and made chairman of the conscripting board of the 4th
district of North Carolina with head-quarters in Wilmington. After the
war he returned to Laurens County, where he practiced medicine and
engaged in farming. He was graduated from the College of Physicians and
Surgeons at Philadephia, his preceptor being the eminent Prof. Agnew, who
was one of President Garfield's surgeons at the time of his death.
"Some years since Dr. Chappell abandoned the practice of medicine,
but continued to manage his various farms and other property
successfully. He represented Laurens County for two terms in the
legislature. His first term was served early after the war's end and his
second term but a few years since. In 1891 he moved to Dublin and a
short time thereafter was elected an alderman of the city. During his
life he held various positions of honor and trust, all of which he filled
to the satisfaction of his constituents.
"The sincerity of his devotion was the charm of his success. He
was prudent, sagacious, laborious and wise. He consulted the people's
interest just as he would have done his own. His positions were
thoroughly taken, securely fortified and boldly defended. He was a
sentinel who never left the post of duty, in the discharge of which he
performed well his part and had left to posterity the results of a useful
life, a spotless record and an honored name.
"In the death of Dr. Chappell Laurens County loses an upright
citizen, the church a faithful and conscientious member, and his family
a loving and
tender husband. a fond and devoted father.
"Funeral services were held over his remains by Rev. R. E.
Neighbour and interment was in the Stanley cemetery twelve miles north of
Dublin. He was
interred with Masonic honors, being a member of Laurens Lodge # 75 F. &
A. M., and despite the inclement weather a number of friends and
acquaintances gathered at the burying ground to pay the last tribute of
respect to his memory.
The Courier-Dispatch, in common with all the people of Laurens county,
extend to the family and relatives its heartiest sympathy over his
death."
>From "The Atlanta Constitution": [undated clipping]
"News has been received in the city of the death of Dr. J. T.
Chappell of Laurens County, one of the best known and most prominent
citizens of that section of the state.
"Dr. Chappell was a member of the famous alliance legislature of
1890 and 1891. He was quite an influential political charactrer, not only
in Laurens county, but throughout the state, coming forward prominently
in alliance affairs from 1888 to 1893.
"He was a man of splendid character and stood among the first in
his community. As a practicing physician, which profession he followed
the greater part of his life, he was of unusual popularity and was know
personally perhaps to every man in the county. A leading citizen of
Laurens county was in the city a few hours yesterday and stated that the
death of Dr. Chappell had been felt by rich and poor alike; that the
community had been benefitted by his presence there to an extent not
fully appreciated until after his death."

Thank you to all who responded to my query as to the identity of AGNES
CHAPPELL, who freed her slaves In Prince George Co., VA, in 1790 and
1792.
My ancestors in VA about then were:
THOMAS CHAPPELL (b. 1642, d. 1702-1703,Prince George Co., VA)
m. ELIZABETH JONES
Their sons:
SAMUEL CHAPPELL ( b. Abt. 1680, d. Bef. Nov. 21, 1749, Surry -formerly
Prince Geo.)
m. ELIZABETH SCOTT
THOMAS CHAPPELL (1678-1726) m. HANNAH HUNNICUTT
*So, Benjamin Chappell, Agnes' husband, was the nephew of my ancestor,
Samuel Chappell.
I found the discussion of the Quakers' owning slaves and then freeing
them quite interesting. Were there many Quakers among the Chappells in
VA? Just wondering if mine might have been Quakers also.
Thanks again to all of you for the help,
Suzanne Coker

Has anyone run across a Damon Chaple (or any variant spelling), born abt
1806 in Mass. He is living in Jo Daviess Co., IL in 1850.

This is the ancestral tree of Andrew Jackson Chappell, born 1821:
Andrew J. Chappell - (b)1821 in N.C. ?
Benjamin Chappell - (b)1790 in N.C. married Elizabeth
Emory
Samuel Chappell - (b)1760 in N.C. married Mary Pollard
Robert Chappell - (b)1740 in Va. married Elizabeth
Scott
Samuel Chappell - (b)1696 in Va.
Thomas Chappell - (b)1650 in Va. married Elizabeth
Jones
Thomas Chappell - (b)1612 in Gravested, Eng.
married Mary Banister
John Chappell - (b)1590 in Eng. married Mary
Barker. John was the Captain of the
ship "Speedwell", which came over to
Jamestown, Va. in 1635 and then
returned to England. His son, Thomas,
came over the same year on the
ship "American".
Given to me by Marty Chappell of Missouri 10-4-97. He has a HUGE list of
Chappells (over 2000 names). Unfortunately, I haven't been able to connect
to this line. His Andrew and mine are two different people, so far as I can
tell. P. Doss
Thomas Chappell and Hannah Hunnicutt are one of my side lines.
Thomas was the brother of my ancestor, Samuel Chappell.
I do not have any children listed for Thomas and Hannah. I would be
very happy to exchange my line with someone who can give me the
descendants of Thomas and Hannah. Or any other info that I might
have that someone needs.
My Chappell page is located at:

Hi from OKC
I'm not sure if Suzanne T. Coker or others are interested in information
about Agnes Chappell or not, but I have some information I will share here
and if someone wants all I've got, let me know.
Agnes (Binford) Chappell was from an old Quaker family. Surprisingly,
Quakers did own slaves in early day Virginia. Early in the 18th century the
church began discussing the slavery issue and soon there were directives by
the church that the practice was contrary to the Quaker faith. Other
religious groups (Baptist, Methodist) moved in the same direction as
evidenced in the Will of Thomas Baldwin (Will date 19 APR 1797) when he
instructed his heirs to free their inherited slaves when the slave became 25
years old.
Agnes was d/o John & Agnes (Mosby) Binford and married (3 AUG 1754) Benjamin
Chappell, s/o Thomas and Hannah (Hunnicut) Chappell. Thomas and Hannah were
also Quakers.

I'm searching for the "whereabouts" of William Arasmus Chappell (son of
Alban Chappell) after he left Jo Daviess Co., IL in abt 1860. Some say that
he went into Canada, but I have no evidence to support that idea. Has
anyone seen him in your genealogical wanderings?
Also still searching for the parentage and actual birthplace of Alban
Chappell.

This was posted by the Andrews list owner. I thought I'd pass it along,
Barbara
Prior to the US's entry into WW1 (approx. 1917-1918) every male
between the
age of 18 and 40 was required to register for the draft. The
information
found on the card was provided by the individual himself. The
registration
cards vary in information depending on the individual draft board. But
by
and large the cards include: The full name of the person (this means
first,
full middle name, any additional middle names and last name); the
current
address of the man; his age; his birthdate (some include his place of
birth); whether he is a US citizen or a naturalized citizen (some ask
if his
father was a naturalized citizen and his father's race); his race; his
occupation; where he is employed (name of employer); address or
location of
employment; name and address of his next of kin; some cards ask if the
man
is married or single and how many people he supports. The card is
signed by
the draftee. On the back of the card his physical description is
noted:
Height is broken down by short, medium, tall although some cards give
the
actual height in feet and inches; Build by slim, medium, stout
although some
cards list actual weight along with the build; color of eyes and hair;
any
deformities or injuries are listed (such as one arm missing, blind in
one
eye, etc); the name and address of the draft board and the date.
When these original cards were transferred to the East Pointe NARA
branch
the LDS spent about 3 years microfilming these cards. There are
hundreds and
hundreds of boxes and the LDS opened one box at a time and filmed
them - in
state order. However, within each state the cards were filed by draft
board,
not by county or by draftee. This makes the searching of the microfilm
difficult to say the least.
The good news is that the Friends of the National Archives took each
box
after it was filmed (and checked) and sorted all of these thousands
and
thousands of cards into - state and then COUNTY order and then in
alphabetical order by surname and put then in new boxes. The Friends
deserve
all the kudos we can give them for this monstrous task.
So ... rather than spending hours and hours searching the LDS
microfilm you
can order copies of the original cards from NARA. if you know the
county
your ancestor lived in between 1917-1918.
And BTW - Ancestry.com lists WW1 Draft cards in their searchable data
bases,
however I know for a fact that there are 22 cards for the surname
WHITE
found in McIntosh Co, OK and Ancestry only gave me 4 of them so don't
depend
on that site. I was told yesterday that some reps from Ancestry had
visited
the archives a couple of weeks ago to talk about filming the cards,
took one
look at the hundreds and hundreds of boxes and simply left.
For copies: Send a letter requesting copy(s) to:
NARA
Southeast Region
1557 St. Joseph Ave
East Point, GA 30344
In your letter be sure to say you want copy(s) of the WWI Draft
application
Cards. Include the name of your ancestor and his race, the state and
the
county. If you want copies of ALL of the cards with a given surname,
ask
them the cost of the copies and send a SASE for them to let you know
the
copying cost. In your letter be sure and say you want a copy of the
FRONT
and BACK of the card. Be sure to send a SASE for the return of you
copies.
The cost for the copy is 50 cents - 25 cents for the back and 25 cents
for
the front. If you only want one copy send a buck and say the
difference is
to be given to the Friends of the Archives, because after all they did
all
this wonderful hard work for you <VBG>
If you have any other questions about the cards please write to me and
I'll
try to help. I've been "delving" into these cards for the past few
years.
But PLEASE don't ask me to get the copies for you. It is difficult for
me to
take the time off from work to visit the archive to do my own research
<g>.
And feel free to pass this on to any of the lists you are on. >>

Holly, Arlene & others,
I have Andrew's military records..............but they not much help. It
does help me to understand some things, but I still have no clue where in SC
he was born or who his parents were. He enlisted when he was 21 yrs. old on
14 July 1862 and only served a little more than a year. Throughout this time
he was repeatedly sent to a Greenville, TN hospital. I received these
records from a distant cousin. I had found one other Andrew Chappell, but
through my Andrew's military records, I found that they were not one & the
same.
The pronunciation of our Chappell is CHAP-el, like the church. This is
about all I have..........I wish I had more to go on..........thank for your
help! P. Doss
