Greetings, Chappell researchers!
I hope I am in the right place. I am if you pronounce the name
sha-PELL.
Searching the roots of Godfrey/Gotfried SHUTPELL (pronounced
sha-PELL) born in 1834 in Stettin, Pommerania, Prussia of unknown parentage.
He immigrated to N. America ca. 1854, settling in NY sometime by 1865, after
his service in the Civil War, perhaps.
I have despaired of ever finding another SHUTPELL researcher. Then I
finally figured out there were others researching sha-PELLs under different
spellings: SCHIPPELL, SCHAPPAL, SCHAPPELL, SHOPBELL and SHOPWELL. And since
they all sound like CHAPPELL, I thought I'd come to you guys.
My theory is that my man Godfrey's forebears were Huguenots who fled
France and wound up in Prussia-- in German Protestant states-- where they
stayed and Germanized the name, but not the pronunciation. And that would
explain why my Prussian ggGfather had a French-sounding name.
So tell me to pull up a swivel chair and stay-- or tell me this is
the wrong list. If it's the right one, I have some other sha-PELLs who may
subscribe as well.
Cheers!

Does anyone live near Washington, DC area who frequents the Library of
Congress? I'm trying to get a copy of an abstract from a will on George
Chappell who died between 1769 and 1776 -(I think in Kent County, MD.) He
had at least two children - James and Mary, who are listed in the 1776 census
living in home of Mary Thompson in Harford County...so I may have the county
wrong)
I've been told this info is in Maryland Calendar of Wills, which is available
there in that library...It has to be in one of the last 3 volumes I think
#15, 16, or 17...based on the dates... I've written the Register of Wills in
Kent County and she doesn't have all the volumes. She replied that she
couldn't find it in her indexes...
I live in SC and don't have any immediate plans to be in Washington... I'll
be glad to return the favor with data on SC Chappells if someone can take
time to copy this abstract for me.... Maybe if I get the exact date of death,
Kent or Harford County can come up with the full text... (Or maybe it's a
different county? )
Thanks!
