Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
G'Day members
Please take note I have recieved notice that over the coming week or so,
RootsWeb will be changing its mailing list software, affecting all the
Lists, including CHAPPEL-L(The MessageBoards will also be changing.)
The change is necessary because the old software currently in use is no
longer supported by the developer of the software.
Currently we are classed as a "C" (A-C are due to move 15 August, the
time might be either during Tuesday or Wednesday, depending upon what
international time zone they are using for the date of changeover).
Until there's any notice to the contrary, I am working on the basis
that it's going to happen on Tuesday.
I'll try to let you know if and/or when I know more. In the meantime
there is no reason to let any of this interrupt the important business
of the List.
The changes for subscribers will not be anything to worry about.
Significant differences to be expected:-
Most significant is the fact that you cannot be subscribed twice to
the List under a single email address. Thus if you wish to subscribe
to the CHAPPEL List (or any list) in both Mail mode and in Digest
mode simultaneously you will need to use two separate email addresses - one
for each mode.
The message posting mode will no longer need the "L" in the address
for posting mail to the list. However, we are told you can still
send messages to the list using the CHAPPEL-L(a)ROOTSWEB.COM or you
could simply use the new format CHAPPEL(a)ROOTSWEB.COM after the
switchover.
Both addresses will work after the list has been migrated. Some listers
may need to alter their mail filters if affected by this dropping of the
"L".
The "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" commands will be a little different.
However there will be a tag line at the bottom of all list messages
for a while afterwards giving instructions for this so it shouldn't be
a problem.
To subscribe or unsubscribe, the word SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE will
need to be in the *Subject line* of the e-mail - not the body of
the text which still works at present.
Everyone will have the facility to stop mail being sent to them, and
then to turn it back on again, whenever they choose - very handy for
holiday times. This is known as "no mail mode". A change requested
by List Managers. Many listers will appreciate this rather than get
bounced off the list because your inbox fills up while on Holidays
and messages bounce back to Rootsweb and autocue the servers to
remove that address.
Digest format will be a little different. AOL subscribers will
receive a Zip file of messages but this is down to AOL rather
than Rootsweb, as I understand it.
There will be changes to the way in which bounced mailings are
handled by the system. Up to now as Admin I have usually received
copies of bounces and I could see when there was an ongoing problem
with a subscribers address. This will no longer be the case and I
will be unaware of a problem until the system disables your list
account due to the bounces.
I think that covers the main changes you'll need to be aware of but
I'll do my best to update everyone as and when there's anything more
to tell.
Anyway for now it's continue as usual.
regards
Michael Cheeseman

Subject: MATHEW, Catherine, Agnes, Mary, SARAH (SMITH) CHAPEL
To: Chapel-L(a)rootsweb.com
I am seeking information about the births and deaths of these Chapels
and a marriage between MATHEW SMITH CHAPEL and a CATHERINE, who
according to her tombstone was married to MATTHEW. She was born 1790, died
1853, and is buried in Prospect Cemetery, Valatie. Identity of maiden
name and parents sought.
MATHEW SMITH CHAPEL was born in Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Mass.,
the son of RICHARD CRIGNON CHAPEL and SARAH SMITH. RICHARD died in
1825. SARAH may have died in 1828 in Columbia County and may be buried in
a little cemetery next to the river in Stuyvesant.
The 1860 and 1865 census returns show MATHEW in the poorhouse in
Ghent. 1840 and 1850 census returns for Kinderhook show two daughters MARY
and AGNES, but I have found nothing further concerning them. MATHEW
was not listed in the 1850 return--just CATHERINE and the two girls.
Any information regarding this family would be
greatly appreciated.
Mathew was my 3G grandfather.
