Greetings Listers
I hope you all have a Happy and Safe Easter Holiday in
2002. For those driving to a holiday destination take
care on those roads.
Generally for all members the holiday season is a good
time to repost your interests to the list as generally
people have more time to spare on their hobbies during
the holidays. While some members leave the list new
members join. Maybe a new member lurking in the shadows
is your long lost relative?
Please note. Living individuals should not be discussed
on the list as this is breaching privacy laws as this
is a public email list.
Secondly no commercial activities are allowed
Such as book selling/pricing, Research Services
or gathering email addresses for advertising companies
nor is database collectioning for libraries or gathering
info for sale on CD-ROM. Copyright resides with the person
who post the message. While info can be used for
private research. It must be remembered that you
breach copyright if info is placed in the public
domain such as in a book, CD-ROM or posted on a website
without prior permission.
For you Newbies and not so newbies most family
historians work in a common courtesy way. It is fair and reasonable to
request from the author to use their info
posted in email or recieved by Snail mail in a family
history you wish to publish. Most have no problem with this as long as the
source is mentioned.
On occassion this has not happened and it is surprising how often the flow
of information dries up from experienced researchers when they have someone
publish their info
without their permission. The effect is you miss out on
sharing of new info or of old research they haven't sent
you yet. Some experienced researchers stung more than once
stop sharing info altogether with everyone, which is a real shame.
Also information placed in family History Books, Websites
etc that dont quote a source are next to useless as the accuracy of the
information cannot be checked. It also
leads to speculation that the information is poached from
the true Author. Anyone following in the footsteps of family members to
update a family history 10-15 years later has to start from scratch due to
lack of sources quoted.
Happy Hunting and I wish everyone success in their research.
regards
Michael Cheeseman
