Dear Mary,
This is what I have so far on my John Chapples. This info. has source superscript but just ignore that. There are quite a few Chapples in Devon and maybe some came from Wales. They list themselves as English on census data at least in Canada.
1. John1 Chapple was born 1771 in Bishops Nympton, Devon, England1,2, and died 28 March 1852 in Chittlehampton, Devon, England3. He married Mary Huxtable 04 December 1803 in Chittlehampton, Devon, England, daughter of Edmund Huxtable and Rachael ____. She was born 22 April 1782 in Chittlehampton, Devon, England4,5.
In 1851 British Isles census, John Chapple 80, with wife Mary, 70 lived in Chittlehampton, South Molton, Devonshire. Living with them were their children, Sarah, 45, a workwoman, Mary, 40, a needle worker, and Edmund, 34, a laborer.
David Ryall, parish clerk for Chittlehampton, has transcribed from original parish records birth, marriage and burial from 1813 to 1900. He relates: John Chapple (Sr.) and Mary, parents of Ann, b: 30 May 1813, William 9 April 1815, Jane 25 February 1816, Edmund 22 March 1818 and James 21 April 1822. He does not have records transcribed before 1813 so cannot confirm John, Sarah or Mary born in 1805-1807, 1806 and 1811 by FHL IGI. John's birth year is best at 1805, which works for census data in that some asked for age at next birthday, and some at age at time of census. FHL IGI supports birth or christening dates for: Sarah, b: 26 December 1806, Betty, chr: 18 April 1808; Mary Huxtable, b: 19 May 1811, and first Edmund, b: 18 February 1810.
Mary's last name as Huxtable is not confirmed by records but is presumed because she and John named their daughter Mary Huxtable Chapple. There are Huxtables in the same areas as Chapples and have family names the same as John and Mary's children. Marriage date is by records of a Mary Huxtable and John Chapple.
Children of John Chapple and Mary Huxtable are: (some are FHL sources)
+ 2. i. John2 Chapple, born 04 July 1805 in Chittlehampton, Devon, England; died 1899 in Huron Co., Ontario, Canada.
3. ii. Sarah Chapple6,7, born 28 December 1806.
4. iii. Betty Chapple8, born 18 April 1808.
5. iv. Edmund1 Chapple9, born 18 February 1810.
6. v. Mary Huxtable Chapple10, born 19 May 181111.
7. vi. Ann Chapple12, born 30 May 1813.
8. vii. Jane Chapple13, born 25 February 1816.
9. viii. Edmund Chapple14,15, born 22 March 181816.
10. ix. James Chapple17,18, born 21 April 1822.
Generation No. 2
2. John2 Chapple (John1)19,20,21,22 was born 04 July 1805 in Chittlehampton, Devon, England23, and died 1899 in Huron Co., Ontario, Canada24. He married Elizabeth Luxton25 26 December 1829 in Chittlehampton, Devonshire, England26,27, daughter of <John> Luxton> and <Susanna Short>. She was born 08 August 1802 in Wembworthy, Devon, England28, and died Aft. February 1842 in Devon, England.
John Chapple was a Smith (blacksmith) who apparently moved around quite a bit based on the birthplaces of his children. In April 1830, John was born in Filleigh, Devon. In May 1832, Jane Luxton was born in Clapworthy, Devon. In December 1834, James was born in South Molton, Devon. "Filleigh is just north of Chittlehampton Village, Clapworthy is still in the parish but about 3 miles east of the village. South Molton is 6 miles east. However the forge at Clapworthy is actually in the parish of South Molton. Clapworthy is a small hamlet on the banks of the River Bray, which forms part of the parish boundary." from David Ryall, parish clerk for Chittlehampton who has transcribed, from original records, birth, marriage and burial information from 1813 to 1900.
In 1851 British Isles census, John Chapple was living in the Chittlehampton, South Moulton, Devonshire, England. He was widowed, age 45, a smith and tool maker, born in Chittlehampton, and living with his daughters, Jane, unmarried, age 18, and Mary, age 10, a scholar, both born in Chittlehampton. His father, mother and three siblings lived nearby. His son James may have been a servant living elsewhere, as there is a James Chapple, born 1832 in South Molton in the census.
About 1853-1854 he emigrated from Devon to Ontario, Canada. He came with his daughters Jane and Mary, and maybe another daughter Lydia and son James or John. One son had died in Devon before emigration. The son that came to Canada died shortly after arrival by family history reports. Since John's father died in 1852, he may have felt then able to emigrate since he was the oldest son and possibly responsible for his parents. Mary said it was a very rough crossing.
In 1861 Hullett Twp., Huron Co., Ontario, Canada census he was living in Ward 4 with his daughter Mary. He was a blacksmith, born in England, Baptist, age 55 and a widower. One male and one female lived in a 1-story log home. He had 1 1/2 acres, blacksmith business, $220.00 capital investment, raw materials were iron and steel valued at $200.00 and he employed 1 person at $25.00 per month. The annual value of product was $200.00. .
In 1871 census, age 64, and 1881 census, age 75, he lived with John and Mary Chapple Walker in Hullett Twp., Huron Co., Ontario. He may have continued to live with Mary after John's death in 1882. Possibly he died in 1899 by probate court records but this is not yet confirmed.
Elizabeth Luxton wife of John Chapple supported by FHL IGI records and Chittlehampton Parish records. Luxton last name is supported by Jane and Mary's middle names. By family history Mary was raised by aunts so possibly Elizabeth died shortly after her birth or at least by 1851.
Children of John Chapple and Elizabeth Luxton are:
11. i. John3 Chapple29,30, born 18 April 1830.
+ 12. ii. Jane Luxton Chapple, born 02 May 1832 in Clapworthy, Chittlehampton Parish, Devon, England; died 10 April 1920 in Hullett Twp., Huron Co. Ontario. She married Hugh Hill. I have more records for her family if interested.
13. iii. James Chapple31,32,33, born 26 December 1834.
James was born in South Molton, Chittlehampton Parish, Devon, England. He or his brother John died before emigration to Canada as only one son came with them and one had died in England by family history.
14. iv. <Lydia> Chapple34, born Bef. 1842.
Lydia Chapple, married Samuel Knell in 1858 in Hullett, Huron County. Father: John Chapple. She may be the 3rd Chapple daughter referred to in family history.
+ 15. v. Mary Luxton Chapple, born 20 February 1841 in Chittlehampton, Devon, England; died 14 January 1937 in Spokane, Spokane, Washington. She married John Walker, s/o Joseph Walker and Ann Hick in 1866.
Dear Cliff,
I have a John Chapple, b: 1807 in Devon who came with his daughters Jane Luxton Chapple, Mary Luxton Chapple and son either John or James Chapple about 1854 to Huron Co., Ontario Goderich/Hullett areas. Possibly another daughter was Lydia. The son died shortly after arriving and I have no record or suggestions that John Sr. married again. So there were no male Chapples but why did they come to Canada - maybe there were other Chapples there. I have more on John's father/mother/siblings if you are interested. The name is not that common in the Huron Co. area. Thank you, Laura
