John C. Chastain
Born 2 December 1807 in Simpson County, Kentucky, a son of Reverend Joseph
and Nancy? (Young) Chastain. He married, Louisa Chapman the 29 April 1828
in Rhea County, Tennessee. She was born the 11 May 1812 in Georgia. They
had 3 children, all born in Rhea County, Tennessee; William C., born 31
July 1829, Also in Company "D"; Francis Marion, born 2 October 1831, also
in Company "D"; and Joseph, born 6 November 1833. In occupation he was a
farmer. He resided as follows; 1850 Green Township, Lawrence County,
Missouri; 1860 Breckenridge Township, Christian County, Missouri; 1870 and
1880 Galloway Township, Christian County, Missouri. He died the 26 April
1889 in Christian County, Missouri. He was buried in the Chastain
Cemetery, Christian County, Missouri. His wife died the 4 December 1896.
No pension applied for.
Service: Enlisted into Company "D" the 19 August 1861 in Rolla, Missouri.
Rank: Private. Height: 5'5"; Hair: dark; Eyes: blue; Complexion: fair.
Mustered into service the 14 October 1861 at St. Louis, Missouri.
Discharged 11 July 1862 at St. Louis, Missouri for disability.
Francis Marion Chastain
Born 2 October 1831 in Rhea County, Tennessee, a son of John C. and Louisa
(Chapman) Chastain. He married, Sarah Margaret Ann Downing the 27 November
1851 in Lawrence County, Missouri. She was born the 29 May 1835 in Greene
County, Missouri, the adopted daughter of Reverend Thomas and Margaret
Downing. They had 13 children, all born in Missouri; John James, born 2
September 1852; Louisa, born 18 September 1854; Rolley, born 12 March
1857; Levi, born 28 April 1859; Frances, born 6 August 1861; Frankey, a
daughter born 17 February 1863; Minnie, born 8 October 1866; Nancy, born 5
June 1869; Robert, born 2 September 181: Joseph "Joe"; born 8 February
1874; Horace, born 29 July 1876; Belle, born 3 June 1878; and Elizabeth
"Bessie", born 6 February 1881. In occupation he was a blacksmith. He
resided as follows; 1850 Green Township, Lawrence County, Missouri; 1860
Breckenridge Township, Christian County, Missouri; 1870 Galloway Township,
Christian County, Missouri; 1880 Ozark Township, Lawrence County, Missouri;
1890 and 1900 in Galloway County, Missouri. He died the 25 May 1906 in
Jasper County, Missouri. He was buried in the Chastain Cemetery, Christian
County, Missouri. His wife died the 30 May 1931 in Christian County,
Missouri. She was buried in the Hopedale Cemetery, Finley Township,
Christian county, Missouri.
Service: Enlisted into Company "D" the 19 August 1861 in Rolla, Missouri.
Rank: Private. Height: 5'8"; Hair: dark; Eyes: blue; Complexion: fair.
Mustered into service the 14 October 1861 in St. Louis, Missouri. He was
taken prisoner at the Battle of Van Buren, Missouri on the 28 December
1862, while on detached service with the Pontoon Battalion. (See pages 68
throughout 71). Taken to the Confederate Prison at Little Rock, Arkansas.
Paroled the 30 January 1863 at Little Rock, Arkansas. Reported to Benton
Barracks, Missouri the 12 February 1863. 16 January 1864: detailed as
wagonmaster for the supply train. Mustered out of service the 14 October
1864 at St. Louis, Missouri. His father, John C. Chastain, also served in
Company "D".
