We are looking for any info about this James Chapman. He said in the 1850
Ross County Ohio census that he was born in NC, but his son later said his
father was born Tenn. So thinking possibly in the part of NC that became
Tenn. Family legend says that his parents split up either through divorce
or fathers death and he came to Ohio with mother, she remarried. The first
we have of them in Ohio is in Jackson County, Franklin Twsp. A James
Chapman helpled lay out the town of Jackson in 1816. A David Radcliff
helped the surveyor. The other people named were later related to the
family through marriages so this is probably the right James.
He married Rebecca Radcliff in before the 1820 census. At that time it
listed 2 males, 16 to 26 years, 1 female under 10, I female over 16-18,
one over 45. Can not account for who these are, but possibly mother and
brother, sister??
There is a marriage in Scotio County Ohio for a Mrs. Sarah Chapman to a
Barry Ragsdale. Is this the mother??
The children of James and Rebecca are as follows.
1 William Chapman, born 7 Sept. 1820, marries, Jane Ann Greelely, moved
to Ross County Ohio, and then was killed in Civil War in MO.
2 Robert Ross Chapman, born 10 March 1823 marries Mahala Josephine
Mercer, they live in Scioto County. He dies in Lucasville, Ohio. Served
in Civil war at age 45.
3?? birth order. Lorane marries Daniel Beaver and moves to Mo. Married 3
July 1842
4 ??birth order. Nancy Ann marries James B. Clark in Ross County 1 Oct
1846
5 Andrew Chapman born ca 1826, marries 1-Margaret Butts in Macon County IL
on 23 Oct 1851 2nd marriage to Eva Florey
6 Josph Chapman born ca 1830 marries Nancy Huffman 14 Jan 1857 Macon
County IL
7 Catherine"Kate" born ca 1833 marries Henry Smith, 4 May 1851 Ross County
Ohio
8 Susan born ca 1835 marries Alfred Harrington 22 May 1856 Macon County IL
9 Leatha born ca 1838 marries Alexander Troughbaugh 21 March 1858 Macon
Co. IL
10 Sarah Jane born ca 1841 marries Alonzo Florey 9 Sept 1858 Macon Co. IL
This family was in Jackson County Ohio until 1850 census, Ross County Ohio,
then in 1860 census James, Andrew, Joseph, and younger children moved to
Macon County IL where James and Rebecca died.
I would welcome any info on James' or Rebecca's parents, marriage date and
place, and where the children in Ohio and MO ended up. I am descended from
Robert and He stayed in Scioto County Ohio after Civil War and I will
include info about his children in another posting.
