Hello Susan,
Thank you for your most interesting letter. Unfortunately, I do not connect
to your family... yet.
I belong to the Chapman family list and so I am forwarding your letter to
them at CHAPMAN-L(a)rootsweb.com in hopes that someone on this list will be
able to help you.
Happy hunting,
Joyce Clarke-Jensen

Subject: Fw: Annis Chapman - Judah Dodge
I'm looking for information about my 4th-great grandmother, Annis Chapman -
1761- July 30,1851. I have no documentation of her birth date, nor do I
know where she was born or who her parents were. I do know that she married
Judah Dodge I. (no documentation) Judah I (Tristram, John, David Britain,
Daniel) is descended from the Block Island Dodges. He was born Feb.10,
1770 (no documentation - where?-Colechester?) In my grandfathers papers I
found the following:
"It is said that Judah I was a very large and powerful man. He went from
Colchester, Connecticut to Windham, Vermont. Windham records show that
Judah Dodge bought of James Rogers 100 acres for $100.00 September 1, 1797.
He sold the same land for $500.00 to Samuel Moore, Jr. October 31, 1812. He
and his family then migrated to Ohio where he again bought land in Union Co.
He and his wife, Annis Chapman Dodge, are buried in New California
Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Union Co."
"There are a number of Dodges who settled near Rome, Ohio.....Jeremiah Dodge
of this location was married to one Elizabeth Chapman who was eleven years
older than Annis Chapman. They came from East Haddam Connecticut, and in
1811 sold land in Lyme, Connecticut. the date of this sale, the coincidence
of the name Chapman makes one wonder whether there wasn't some connection
between those Dodges and our own family. Woodward indicates that they were
descended from the Block Island family but the name of his father is not
known."
"O.J. Dodge (Judah I's great grandson) also recalls that he was told that
Johnny Appleseed (whose name was John Champman) was a frequent visitor to
the home of Judah and Annis. Could this be a further Chapman connection?
However, one must remember that Johnny Appleseed visited many farms in the
area."
I am just beginning to do genealogical research. Any information or
pointers on the Chapmans or Dodges would be appreciated. I have many
stories and some photos from Judah and Annis to present. I would love to
share with anyone who is interested.
Sincerely,
Susan Dodge Marsico
