I am grateful to Molly Shown for noticing my query on RootsWeb about Martha
Chapman who m. Rufus Flagg at Worcester, MA 6 Nov or 3 Dec., 1767. Rufus
Flagg4 was b. 18 Jan. 1742/3 to Ebenezer3 (Benjamin2, Thomas1) Flagg and
Lydia ____. Rufus and Martha (Chapman) Flagg had children b. at Worcester,
MA:
John, b. 29 Jan 1770
Ebenezer, b. 13 Sep 1772
Perley, b. 13 Feb. 1775 m. Persey (or Persis) Fiske
Rufus, b. 7 Oct 1777
Nathaniel, b. 19 Aug 1780
Tyler, b. 27 Feb. 1784
Patty, b. 20 July 1786
Sally, b. 25 Aug 1790
Molly recognized the childrens names as being similar to the names in the
Johnny Appleseed Chapman article which appeared in the January, 1997 issue of
the Chapman Family Association. Thanks to her tip, and her gracious offer to
send me a copy of the newsletter, I believe that my Martha Chapman is very
probably the daughter of John and Martha (Perley) (Boardman) Chapman and the
aunt of Johnny Appleseed. She was b. Aug. 30 1743 and is not mentioned
further in the newsletter or in other Appleseed sources.
I now have a copy of the Florence Wheeler article in the Ohio State
Archaeological and Historical Quarterly (Vol 48, 1939). Florence Wheeler
does not attempt to harmoize her research with the Edward Chapman Genealogy
which gives the son John of of John and Elizabeth (Davis) Chapman, b. 2 Jan
1715 as having married Joanna Perkins rather than Martha Perley. The Edward
Chapman Genealogy does not have a Chapman who m. a Perley. I am wondering if
anyone else has been able to find another ancestry for this John who m.
Joanna Perkins.
I have Martha Perleys ancestry and also that of Rebecca Smith. I have not
been able to identify Elizabeth Davis and wonder if any one of you have more
on her.
My thanks again to Molly, whom I hope will soon be able to prove her link
through Mollie Eliza and to the Chapman Family Association for publishing
this information.
