NATHAN CHAPMAN (father of JOHN CHAPMAN b ca. 1746 VA d ca. 1803 SC) died May
1772 in Halifax County, VA. This Nathan had children John, Susan (Dillard),
Mary, Sarah, Thomas and Ann (Bolling).
There is another NATHAN CHAPMAN of VA who was a contemporary of George
Washington (and there may be others).
Is anyone researching NATHAN/NATHANIEL CHAPMAN who can help me sort out which
one was in Caroline County, VA as early as 1734, which one was in Fairfax
County, VA in 1754, which one had a wife Rosa and which one died in Halifax
County in 1772?
Any help appreciated. Will gladly share information.

Russ: We have
been in touch before and since that time I have
corresponded with Bill Chapman. I have done a great deal of research on
the subject of Nathan Chapman and the info seems to indicate that the
Nathan Chapman (father of John) who died in Halifax County was the one
who was part of Capt Lewis's company in the French and Indian War. He
was paid in Alexandria on 29 July 1754. He is also listed by George
Washington as participating in the Battle of the Meadows. A petition
filed on 4 June 1770 by Nathan Chapman stated he was "now hindered from
laboring." This date coincides rather nicely with a "sick and weak"
Nathan who died in 1772 in Halifax County. The petition of 1770 was
found in the Journal of the House of Burgesses and referred to the
committee of public claims. I am still looking for any indicator that
the land in Halifax County that Nathan passed to John was a land claim
for service in the F and I war. His name does not appear in the land
claim documents that I have been able to find. I will keep you posted.
