In doing other research I discovered the following notice in New England
Magazine, September, 1831, Vol. I Issue 3, page 280. From digital image

"In Andalusia, Penn. William Chapman, Esg. aged 53. Mr. chapman was a
native of Newport Pagnel, Buckinghamshire, England and the discoverer of the
cure for stuttering.
Afflicted to a great degree in his early years, and finding no relief from
any course recommended by the faculty of his native country, he was induced
to attempt something himself; he succeded, and since his arrival in this
country has been the means of imparting relief to many others."
