Tracy, I would love to find out if anyone claims this James Chapman.
In
trying to make a connection to him I have tracked down some information
which I would like to share with the group:
James Chapman of Scotland landed at Port Oxford, Maryland on August 5, 1747
on the ship Johnson. James Chapman was one of over 900 Scottish prisoners
who were sentenced to be transported to the British colonies in America for
the rest of their lives in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rebellion in
Scotland, which culminated in the battle of Culloden in 1746. James
Chapman was a gardener from Durn, Banffshire, who served in Glenbucket's
regiment and was captured and made a prisoner at
Carlisle. References: Coldham, "Scottish Rebels Transported to Maryland,
1747," 63 National Genealogical Society Quarterly (June 1975) at pp.
137-138; McBride, "Lists of Scottish Prisoners Transported to America in
the Aftermath of Culloden--1746," 6 The North Carolina Genealogical Society
Jounal (May 1980) at pp. 78-94. Dobson, David, Directory of Scots Banished
to the American Plantations 1650-1775 (1984) (additional records are said
in this reference to be found in "Prisoners of the '45" and the
"Public
Record Office").
I do not know if this is the same James Chapman who appears in Orange Co.,
VA and then later in Frederick Co., VA, where he dies in 1785.
Anyone who has a James Chapman in this era in VA -- please contact me.

This is interesting as my chapman's came from Banff Scotland. Although only James
came over to Canada and the rest stayed in Scotland. I wonder if he isn't a relative
