In the Ohio tax list for 1800-1810, there are 113 Chapmans listed; 24 in
Washington County, 2 in Jefferson County (formed 1797), and 2 in
Columbiana County (formed 1803). In the 1816 tax list for Stark County:
James Chapman, William Chapman and Polly Chapman. A Roster of Ohio
soldiers in the War of 1812 lists for Washington County: Ens. Elisha
Chapman and Pvts. Simeon Chapman and Hezekiah Chapman.

Chapman, Archibald mar. Elizabeth Mills and were among first settlers
here. They had a son John b. here 1816, who mar. Jane Garlic 1841. Jane
was born here 1814, dau. of William and Elizabeth (Cook) Garlic who
settled here 1814. John and Jane had: George, William, Thomas, John, and
Eliza.
Chapman, George, son of John and Jane above, b. here 1844, m. Sarah
Lewis, b. Lawrence Co., O. 1844, dau. of Samuel and Rhodia (Miller)
Lewis. George and Sarah had: Wm., Louis, Thomas, John, Amos, and Sarah
Chapman, Rev. Augustus, grandson of Archibald Chapman, son of Isaac and
Sarah (Dawson) Chapman who settled here in 1817. Augustus b. here 1844,
mar. Dorcas Sowards who was b. in Lawrence Co. O. 1853, dau. of Isaac
and Nancy (Durcham) Sowards. Isaac Chapman was b. 1812 and his wife
Sarah b. 1818. Augustus and Dorcas had: Sallie & Nannie (twins), Bertha,
Archie, Alwilda and Barnard.
