My last name is Madsen. Lots of times when I'm pronouncing it for others who
are trying to write it they hear Matsen or Mattsen or Madison, etc. . . The
"t" and "d" sound are easily confused and I believe this is also true
of the
"t" and "p" sounds. So it probably depended on whether or not the
person
writing the record asked for the correct spelling or not (and for that matter,
how literate would the person giving the information have been). Well, just a
thought.

BUT....in some census years, both Elisha and his son Otto were listed as
Chatman rather than the correct spelling of Chapman. Whether the census
taker was hard of hearing, or didn't understand their pronunciation of the
name, I don't know.....but I have census data that lists them with both
spellings!
