Hey all,
It's me, Corey, once again. I'm still searching for
some information on my ancestor Joseph Chapman, who
had a son in Mississippi in 1861. Family rumor has it
that Joseph served in the Civil War, and the only
place I've found so far where a Joseph Chapman
consistently shows up is in Rankin Co. MS. I have
learned that the 46th Mississppi Infantry Company D
was formed in Rankin Co. MS, and a Joseph Chapman is
listed among their ranks. So I wrote to the
Mississippi Historical Archives and they were kind
enough to send me what they could find on him. In
what they sent me, which consists only of muster
rolls, Joseph Chapman is listed as being "Present"
from September-December of 1862 and January and
February of 1863. However on all the 1863 and later
muster lists (2 months per list) he is listed as
"Absent since Feb. 24 '63" and later "Absent without
leave since Feb. 20 '63". So my question is this, how
well did they keep track of the soldiers that died
during battle? What is the likelihood that he simply
went back to "the farm" and never went back? And
finally, any idea as to why there is the date
discrepency, first listing his absent date as Feb 24
'63 and then moving it to Feb 20 '63? I look forward
to hearing from you all.
Corey Chapman
