Sorry for getting this in so late. I live 10 miles from the Urbana
University, in Ohio. They also have some other books about Johnny, but I
also think Robert Price's book to be the best one.
Those of you who find Johnny in your lines, and are interested in sharing
his apple
tree growing, can contact Urbana University to get information on
ordering an apple tree. These trees are actual trees, started by grafts
from the only proven tree still living in Ohio by Johnny Appleseed.
You may also wish to visit the museum at the university and see items that
are
linked to Johnny.
I have been trying to find my link with John Chapman's family. However,
my
Chapman's seem to live in close proximity to areas where Johnny had been,
including within 10-20 miles from Johnny's last apple orchard. The only way
I can find a connection is through Amanda Broom Dock Gephart. Her first
husband, Philip Dock, was a sibling of my ancestor, Margaret Katheryn Dock
Koch.
If anyone wishes more info, please let me know.

Thanks, Diana. There are lots of us who can claim collateral relationship
to this amazing man (I'm also a 4th cousin 4 times removed). For those
wanting to learn more I highly recommend Robert Price's scholarly, but
very
readable, Johnny Appleseed, Man & Myth (Urbana University Press,
no doubt
still in print).
I also recommend, for children, Steven Kellogg's Johnny Appleseed, A Tall
Tale Retold and Illustrated (Morrow Junior Books). This is far from the
hokey Disney video which makes Appleseed look pretty dumb!

Jean, Just a little trvia. My wife,Ruth, a retired reading teacher does a
Johnny
Appleseed program for the ele. schools. She reads stories about
Johnny. It blows the childrens' minds since she is Ruth Chapman pretending
to Johnny Appleseed Chapman
