Noni,
Thanks for the kind words, but you give me far more credit than I deserve. I
would not have ever been able to do anything with Chapmans were it not for
folks like you who fed me information.
At the end of this somewhat wordy explanation are the two paragraphs with
your questions.
I've copied CFA President, Al Chapman on this for reasons that will be
obvious as you read on and copied DNA Dan Chapman as this is a fertile field for
some DNA effort.
.. Gil Alford, CFA Corresponding Secretary
I have all these folks "coded" into one of the most screwed up of all the
Chapman branches. CFA has no one to manage this branch so it will just stay
screwed up. I know that President Al Chapman did ask at least one member,
possibly two members, if they would manage the branch but at least one of them still
works for living and with a day job declined the CFA job.
I expect they don't all fit but maybe one day DNA data will help clarify it
for us but I have these folks coded under THOMAS CHAPMAN B. CA 1590 in England.
Some folks say he was the Thomas Chapman who arrived in Virginia in 1610 on
the Tryall.
I have at least seven "published" works that include folks that appear to fit
together some way or another in this branch. I have never had the time to
try to straighten them out. The works are:
Berry, Brian J. L., Ph.D CFA #294, Generations 1-5 of the Family of
Descendants of Thomas Chapman of Jordan's Journey, VA (1998)
Berry, Brian J. L., Ph.D, CFA #294, Northern Neck Families and the Ancestors
of Susan Frances Chapman, Alexander, Chapman, and Pearson, plus connecting
lines including the Balls, Macraes and Washingtons.
Berry, Brian J.L., Ph.D, CFA #294, DRAFT, The American Shaples; Parks and
Chapman
Sawyer, Winonah "Noni" Lillian Chapman, CFA #028, A Chapman Family History 12
Generations
Roberts, George Braden, Genealogy of Joseph Peck and Some Related Families
including . . . the Chapmans . . . (1955) [CFA has only the Chapman pages]
Chapman, Sigismunda Mary Frances, A History of Chapman and Alexander Families
(Richmond, VA, The Dietz Printing Company, 1946)
Some pages from a book Noni calls the "Givens & Hall Book" She sent
pertinent
pages and index but no title page.
Now, I'm not saying that these all fit neatly together and mesh generation by
generation back to Thomas. I've still got the comments you sent telling me
about some of the error in the Roberts book. As I remember you have backed off
of some of your ideas published in your book. But these "families" as a
whole seem to blend together, overlap, etc.
I wish I did not have anything else to do but sit and unravel all this mess
and line it for publication by CFA.
About the two Andrew Chapmans you mention. My source for most, if not all,
of what I have on Andrew, son of William & Mary Ann Bird came from one of your
family group records dated April 1982. That is in the main Chapman data base
and in one of the genealogy files and goes on back through Edward Chapman &
Sarah McCorkle to Richard & Mary Chapman..
The other Andrew who married Martha McClure and all his data comes from the
George Braden Roberts Book, the one you marked up with "WRONG!" The numbers
I'm using are Robert's "register numbers" 1436 Andrew s/o 1393 William
and
Elizabeth Burgess, s/o 1383 Richard C & Margaret Abbott, s/o 1378 Isaac & Sarah
Cole, s/o 1374 Thomas Chapman IV, s/o 1373 Thomas Chapman III and Elizabeth
Craxon, s/o 1371 Thomas Chapman II, s/o 1370 Thomas Chapman b. ca 1590 England,
arrived 1610 and his wife who settled in Jordans Journey, VA. I have most of
these folks in the main Chapman data base but I've never had time to figure out
just how to fit them into the genealogy file.
This all ties in with another limb of the tree generally known as the William
and Anna Knight Chapman descendants. We have members from this bunch too,
but I think there was never a formal publication
If we can ever get a CFA member to agree to take over the management of this
branch and commit to a long time association with CFA then I'll be turning
over all the computer files and hardcopy stuff along with a list of the CFA
members and other contacts I've had (like back in the "Chapman Chatter"
days) to
them and they will have it forever more. If anyone wants to volunteer, don't
tell me, tell President, Al Chapman. Folks who are not members can join and
take over the branch right away, assuming they have a computer genealogy program
to deal with the stuff.
From Noni:
Anyway, as I lost my files I will convay this data on on Andrew Chapman of
Barren Co. Ky. He was b.in 1803 and died in March 1866--married Susan Brown 5
March 1826. Andrew was the 3rd son of William Chapman. Brother of William,
Neal did not have any sons named Andrew. So that rules out Barren Co.
Gil, as I am half lost about this, there is another Andrew Burgess Chapman,
born in 1803 in Giles Co. Va--married Polly (Mary) McClure 16 Dec, 1823. His
father was also William, son of Richard and so on. I know that they removed to
southeastern Ky.
