Thanks for posting. I have been looking for a William Gardner Chapman who
was born about 1824 and moved to Texas in the 1840's. Census records show
him as either being born in TN or Alabama. He was married in MS to a Mariah
Groce of KY. Anyone out there with information?

Hello Marilou,
Concerning Chapmans in Giles County, TN in 1812:
My ancestors (Chapmans) were in Giles County, TN in 1812 but I don't have a
record of anyone with the name you mentioned and don't know anything about a
Riggs. Here's some info that I do have:
Four Chapman men were in Giles County, Tennessee as early as
1812-13. Their
names were William, Benjamin, Thomas, and John. We know that William and
Benjamin were brothers and it is my opinion that Thomas and John were
probably brothers to William and Benjamin although there is no proof. All of
these Chapman men came to Giles county about the same time and lived in the
same general area. They definitely knew each other.
The 1820 Giles County, Tennessee Census lists five Chapman households. There
were William (the oldest), Thomas, John, Benjamin, and Peggy. Peggy lived
next door to Benjamin.
On page 9 we find William:
William Chapman
1 male under 10
2 males between 10 and 16
1 male over 45
3 females between 10 and 16
2 females between 16 and 26
1 female over 45
On page 10 we find John:
John Chapman
1 male between 19 and 26
1 female between 16 and 26
On page 22 we find Thomas:
Thomas Chapman
1 male under 10
1 male between 19 and 26
2 females under 10
1 female between 16 and 26
Also on page 22 we find Benjamin:
Benjamin Chapman
1 male under 10
1 male between 26 and 45
2 males over 45 (Could one of these men been the father of the younger
Chapman men?)
1 female between 16 and 26
Next door to Benjamin we find Peggy (Her given name was quite possibly
"Margaret"):
Peggy Chapman
1 female between 10 and 16
1 female between 26 and 45 (Was Peggy a widow of a brother or an uncle of
the Chapman men? Could her husband have been living next door with
Benjamin?))
I hope this helps you. Good luck.
Mike Chapman
