Pam,
I had the same problem. I knew that my grandfather had killed my aunt's new
husband somewhere between 1927 and 1929. I knew where it happened. I found
out the name of the newspaper in the area at the time. Then I found out that
newspaper was microfilmed for the time I needed. My library has a microfilm
reader and was able to get me a loan of the microfilm reels at a cost of $5.
a reel. 4 at a time. Each reel contained a few months data. Finally on the
last reel (wouldn't you know). I found it!!!.
You could try something like this.It is time
consuming but worth it.

Subject: [CHAPMAN-L] accident
Hi,
I was wondering if someone out there might be able to help me? My Aunt Pearl
(Gladys Pearl (nee Chapman) Brown) was in show business and was traveling
with her agent to the next town when he fell asleep and hit a tree. He was
OK but she was thrown through the windshield and killed. This was in 1928.
When not performing she lived in Portland, ME. with her husband Frank L.
Brown and her 13 year old daughter, Elizabeth. I know it was written up in
the paper because my grandmother showed it to me back when I was just a
child. I would love to have a copy of the story and obit but have no idea
regarding the actual date.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Pamela Weeks
