Bryce! You gave me a clue. Maybe. I'm missing family for a grandpa who showed
up next door at Summit County about 1878, b 1864 - 5 years before that county
began keeping vital stats records. When Allan Burton CHAPMAN married 1st of 3
wives, he and Rosa SKINNER settled in Canton, Stark Co, OH. Perhaps it'd be
worth my while to check out orphans courts in Stark and Summit County for a
Chapman born 1864. While I don't think of him as having been orphaned, ya never
can tell what I might dig up there.
Oh. Another name I've found for this sort of court is Surrogate Court.

Something similar happened to another set of kids (whose father was
Thomas
Chapman) in Stark Co Ohio in 1814. Guardians were appointed after the dad
died but their mom Polly was still alive.
