Thanks for your message. My other thought has been that he was a son of
Samuel Chapman of the Giles family.
Thanks again. EdT of PGH

Joseph Chapman son of William is recorded in the Giles Chapman of
Bridlington
England Book as having married twice to Mary Johnson and 2nd Harriet
Cowan no
dates. There is no further listing for him in the book and I have not
followed up on research to find what became of him. Information is
limited on this
family of William Chapman since he died before his father by 1816 when
Joseph
Chapman died and Penelope filed for administration papers for him. The
Suit Bill
in Equity Court came later after the death of Penelope I believe. It
was
filed in 1821 by David Chapman a son of Joseph and his other heirs. I
believe
Penelope had lived on the property since Joseph's death in 1816. He
did not have a
will but she probably had dower rights or the children allowed her to
stay
there. She would not have inherited the property. Thomas Wilson owned
adjoining
land and she had either allowed him to tend the land or wrongly sold
him the
property. The heirs challenged it in court and filed for the right to
partition
the land and asked for the right to sell it. Which was done at auction
and it
was bought by another Wilson that owned land adjoining on another side
of the
property. I will try to post information on the various Joseph's in
the book
when I have time.
I believe your Joseph in Charleston might be descended from the Ilse of
Wright Chapmans that had a Hardy listed with them in the various
census.
