Neil,
I finally figured out (by the end of your e-mail) that this must have been
a Universalist reunion in a southern state. I was interested, because both
my grandfather, Edwin Pier Chapman, and his father, Daniel W. Chapman, were
married by the Universalist ministers in Cooperstown, NY, so I presume they
attended that church. In fact, Daniel's wife was buried in the
Universalist church grounds, but they were moved, and I've never been able
to find out where!
The Universalist Church has no longer been a church, since at least 1976,
my first trip to Cooperstown. It's been an art gallery, a dress shop, and
last fall when I was there, it's being re-painted and re-furbished again
for some other commercial venture.
Another one of my Cooperstown families, Williams, were staunch
Universalists as well, so my ears always prick up at any mention.
