Dear Linda,
Armour J. Chapman was one of the brothers of my gg grandfather, Samuel
Singleton Chapman. Other known siblings were Albartis Chapman, who
married Matilda Grey, 20 November, 1828 in Hardeman Co, TN, Wiley
Chapman, Pernicia Chapman, who married William Paschall in Calloway Co,
KY in 1839, and Harris Chapman, who was born c. 1811. All appear to
have been born in KY. The 1860 census of Yalobusha Co, MS also lists a
John Chapman, born in 1825 in KY, who may also be a sibling. I have
been in touch with many of the descendants of Samuel, some of Armour and
Pernicia, but in none of the lines does any information concerning the
parents appear to survive. Such in formation as my sister has been able
to gather suggests that Samuel was born near Mayfield, in Graves Co, KY,
which, if true, would suggest that some of the others may have been
also. It has also been suggested to me that the family may have spent
some time in TN before, and perhaps even after, moving to KY. A
colourful family legend concerning Samuel suggests that there may also
have been another brother, name unknown, who went to Texas at some point
around 1840 in a considerable hurry.
I do have a few further details, if you would like them, but my records
are still very patchy, as I have only been researching the family for a
fairly short time.
Best wishes,
Rupert Chapman
