Evelyn:
I was just wondering if you have the children for the Jacob Chapman Jr.,
husband of Sarah Dorsey?
My Jacob Chapman was born in Virginia about 1816 in what would later become
Wheeling, West Virginia. He had a brother named Hugh Chapman born about
1813. Both men migrated to Illinois and bought land by 1840.
Your Jacob Jr. would have been about 30 years old and just right to maybe be
the father of my Jacob and Hugh.
Any connections?

Subject: [CHAPMAN-L] Jacob Chapman-Revolutionary War Soldier
Hi Listers, I am new to this list. I have been to the archives,
and found nothing on Jacob Chapman of Augusta Co. VA.
In 1850 Nicholas Co. census, his widow, (2nd marriage) Rachael (Burgess)
Chapman,
age 70 was living in the household of his son Jacob Jr., age 62 and
his wife Sarah (Dorsey) age 61, daughter of James.
Jacob served in the Revolutionary War. This is what he stated to an agent
of the
pension office W. G. Singleton.
I am in my 80th year of age, Was born in Staunton, Augusta
Co., and settled in Greenbrier Co. in my 60th year of age.
He goes on to tell of his service in the War. This document is dated Jany.
12, 1835.
(b. ca 1755) His witness on this
document was his son William Chapman and he signed his name Jacob
Chapman.
Also witnessing this document was Elverton P. Walker, George Rader, and
Michael Rader
Jacob told he did not remember what month or year he was
born but it was recorded in a bible now in possession of Andrew Blake in
Greenbrier
Co. VA. Andrew Blake was a s/o William Blake, my 5Xgrgrandfather.
William Blake married Hannah_____ (surname probably Chapman). I
believe Hannah and Jacob Chapman were brother and
sister. Why else would Andrew Blake have the Chapman family bible? He then
came to
Nicholas Co., and died there in 1847. I have a document from
Nicholas Co. Court Order Book # D 1844-1853. Aug. 20th 1847; On a motion of
Jacob Chapman who made oath and together with Abraham Sebert, Andrew Neil,
Samuel Neil, and Anthony Rader his security entered into and acknowledged a
bond in the penalty of three Hundred dollars conditioned as the law directs.
Certificate is granted the said Jacob Chapman for obtaining letters of
administration on the estate of Jacob Chapman deceased in due forms.
On another note, Bobbie Sue Henry has been doing some research on the
Chapman family
and sent this information
in a letter out of Lyman Chalkley's 3 vols. of Chronicles
of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia.
Item #448 20Nov1761 Jacob Chapman--Parish Levy for Jacob Chapman's burial.
Could
this be Jacob Chapman's father? If so, Jacob (the one that served in
the Rev. War) would have been ca 6 yrs. old at the time of his father's
death. Does anyone know for sure?
Is there any additions or corrections. Any tidbit of info
will be appreciated. Thanks much.
Warm Regards,
Evelyn (Riffle) Blake in Nicholas Co. WV
