Barry,
They are two different towns. Benton, MO. is the county seat of Scott
County, which is in the southeastern part of Missouri. Daviess Co. is in
the northwest part of Missouri.
We must come from different sets of Chapman's. Mine were in NC until
1820's, then in Tipton Co., TN for the rest of the 1800's and much of the
1900's. I don't have any Chapman's unaccounted for in the 1825-1900 time
frame, other than an Albert G. Chapman who fell off my charts as a very
young man about 1830.
Thanks,
Gary Chapman

Hi Gary,
Do you know whether Benton MO, located between Chaffee and Sikeston, MO,
is
the town formerly known as Benton Township, Daviess Co. in the1860 to
1900
Censuses? My grandfather, Dudley Edward Chapman, was born at Benton
Township
in Oct. 1879, son of John David Chapman & Josephine Morris
Chapman.
Dudley's
siblings were George Washington, Sarena, Sarah & Mary F. Chapman.
John
David's 2nd wife was Emma & they had one son, Eldon, (born 01/10/1899 and
died Kansas, Dec. 1965 ?).
My gggrandfather, David T. Chapman was born 1816/17 (09/24/1817, Halifax
Co.
VA?) He married twice: (1) Mary Groomer, b.1821, (Madison Co. KY?) at
Clay
Co. MO, 10/22/1837, and they lived in Daviess Co. MO. Their children were
George Washington (m. Mary Butler 1865, daughter Elizabeth), Sarah Jane
(m.
Fielden or Fielding Coffey, had 11 children), Nancy Ann (m. Perry J.
McCulley, children unknown) and my ggrandfather, John David, b.1847/48.
Then
David T. married (2) Lucinda..........?, b.1825, KY and in 1880, they
were
living in Harrison Co. MO. Their children were Wiley E. b.1853, Margaret
b.1858, Chloe Jane b.1860, Thomas S. b.1863, Robert W. b.May 1867 &
William
M. b.1870.
David T.'s son, Robert W. Chapman (m. Narssia B. ..........?, b. Aug.
1868)
appeared in the 1900 Census at Benton Township, Daviess Co. MO, with
his
wife and 2 children, Emil S. b. Aug.1889 and Edith b. Dec.1892 and my
grandfather, Dudley.
Do any of these people appear in your family tree?
Barry Chapman,
Tasmania, Australia.
