Hi! Does anyone out there have information on a Jane Elizabeth CHAPMAN who married George
Davenport SAYLLER on 8 March 1868 in Hancock Co., Illinois? George and Jane had 3
children: Charles Fenton SAYLLER b. 22 January 1869 in Hamilton, Hancock Co., Illinois;
Melvin Russell SAYLLER b. 2 July 1874; and Lillie Louise SAYLLER b. 19 August 1879 in
Hancock Co., Illinois.
According to a family Bible that it looks like Jane (she also used Elizabeth as her first
name) was born 25 September 1847 and
according to her widow's pension application for George SAYLLER's Civil War
pension, Jane was born in Fountain Green, Hancock Co., Illinois. However, I have been
unable to locate her in the census until after she married George SAYLLER. In later
census records, she indicates that her father was born in Illinois and her mother in New
York. In the 1870 census, I do find a Henry CHAPMAN (age 21, b. IL) and a Mary CHAPMAN
(age 48, b. NY) living in Fountain Green, Hancock Co., IL - could they be related to Jane?
I have been unable to locate Henry and Mary in prior census records, as well.
Jane lived in Hamilton/Montebello Twp., Hancock Co., Illinois and Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa
until she was moved to a nursing home in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois. She died at that
nursing home on 29 January 1923. Her death certificate says unknown for parent and birth
information.
Thanks!
Kara
