There are numerous Chapmans of that date in nearby Westchester Co NY and in next door
Fairfield Co., Conn. A number of my relatives migrate from Long Island into Westchester Co
and even Queens. Many reunited with relatives from Connecticut.
You should also keep in mind that Chapman might be the name of an in-law rather than in a
direct line.
Be interested in your findings. One of those researchers of the Chapmans of Westchester
Co., NY

Subject: [CHAPMAN] Thankful CHAPMAN (1730-1815) CT? NY
Dear Friends,
I am searching for info on the wife of Eliakim DAVIS (1721-1808).
Her gravestone is inscribed "Thankful, wife of Eliakim, died 8 Apr
1815, AE 85" (hence she was b. about 1730). Was her maiden name
CHAPMAN?
One of their 10 children was named Chapman DAVIS (1758-1837).
Chapman m. Elizabeth CORWIN and they had 7 children, one of whom was
named Chapman, Jr. (1789-1848). Chapman Jr. and his wife, Mary
WELLS, named one of their 4 children John Chapman DAVIS. John
Chapman DAVIS and his wife, Mary Ann TERRY, had a son, John Chapman
DAVIS Jr., who died at age 6. His gravestone is inscribed "Little
Chatty" (with a double "t" - wonder why?).
The preponderance of the name CHAPMAN over 4 generations strongly
suggests a link to the CHAPMAN family, which is why I am appealing to
readers of the CHAPMAN mailing list.
The "Vital Records of Saybrook, CT, 1647 - 1834" shows a Thankful
CHAPMAN born 18 April 1730 in Old Saybrook, CT., daughter of Caleb
CHAPMAN and Thankful LORD. There is no death date given. She makes
an excellent candidate, but a posting to
Ancestry.com states she
married a Daniel INGRAHAM; I have not found a record of that marriage.
I have not found any records of the surname CHAPMAN on Long Island
around 1730 (although I did find an Alfred F. CHATMAN - with a "T" -
on Shelter Island). Consequently I have focused on Connecticut.
Eliakim's mother, wife of Benjamin DAVIS, was Rebecca (---), but I
have no further information about her - possibly she was a CHAPMAN.
I will appreciate any help - suggestions - insight - and I thank you!
If additional details would be helpful, please ask - I may have
overlooked some useful information.
Regards,
Stu Hotchkiss, Williamson, NY
