I'm new to the list and hope someone out there can help me with information
about this Chapman family.
My 3rd great-grandmother was Barbara (Barbary in the census listing), who
was married to Joseph Huff in the 1850 census of New York City and had
children Edward; Mary; Cornelius; Jane; and John, all under age 10.
Living with the family was Eliza Chapman; I think Eliza was Barbara Huff's
sister and Barbara's maiden name was Chapman. According to the 1850
census, Barbara was born in Scotland around 1823.
I found a Chapman family that left from Greenock, Scotland aboard the ship
Francis, arriving in New York City on 26 January 1832. The family
consisted of
Jane (estimated date of birth around 1802);
Barbra (dob about 1822);
Peter (dob abt 1826);
Eliza (dob abt 1828);
John (dob abt 1830); and
Ann (dob abt 1831).
I hypothesize that Jane was bringing the children to join John Chapman (dob
abt 1801), who arrived in NYC from Greenock, Scotland, also aboard the
ship Francis, on 6 September 1831. I found a John Chapman in the 1840 NY
census whose family closely matches the above list. However, neither John nor
Jane Chapman are found in the 1850 census.
I'm hoping someone has some information about this Chapman family, so I can
confirm my hypothesis that Barbara Huff is Barbara Chapman. Also, if
anyone has information about this family's ancestors in Scotland, I'd love to
hear from you.
Thanks and good hunting!
Susan Huff
