Hi Linda,
You have probably already attempted to follow the ancestry/decendancy of
Olive Chapman, etc..
Sometimes skipping to someone else brings new evidence.
Do the children of Harris and Theda Chapman Ide yield any clues on their
own later census pages?
Also NY had state census records on the half census years (like 1835,
1845, 1855, etc). You can
order those through your local Family History Library, from Salt Lake
City (and turn the crank...). That is the
only record I found of my GG Salina P. LINDSEY HODGES, linking her to her
parents in Chautauqua Co. NY.
And Googling any of the Chapman names you found and adding the words
history or genealogy to the search
(or church, reverand, pastor, etc).
I find the search engine Copernic Agent to be an even broader search.
Good Luck Chapman cousin :-)

Thank you, Diana,
I am considering that family, but am hoping to find a more perfect match.
In the 1830 census, the year when Theda was born, there was a Joshua
Chapman in Canisteo, Steuben County. I have found documents on line that
show that Joshua was a Justice in Canisteo in 1837 and 1843 but no evidence
that he was a clergyman. There also might have been a Thomas and Eliza
Chapman in Bath, but I can't make out the 1830 census image. Those are the
only Chapmans I can see in Steuben County at the time of the 1830 census.
I have found documentation that there was an Amos Chapman who was pastor
for Cameron Christian Church during 1833-1843. In 1848 J.S. Chapman was
pastor of the Baptist Church of Cameron. And in 1858 Joseph Chapman was the
minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Cameron. After 1832 Rev.
Joseph Chapman was at the First Methodist Church of Addison. It seems that
the Chapmans were a family of church leaders. :-)
