Subject: Comparing Y-DNA Results
FYI for those of you who have participated with any Y-DNA analysis company.
In case you did not know ...
People with data from two different companies can now compare their results
with each other with the databases at sites such as
YSearch.org or
Ancestry.com
YSearch.org :
For those of you who have participated in the Family Tree DNA test, you can
upload (automatically) your Family Tree DNA data to Ysearch (
www.ysearch.org).
If you have participated with another testing company, you can load (manually)
your data to Ysearch (
www.ysearch.org ).
Please follow these instructions to transfer your Family Tree DNA results to
Ysearch.org :
First log on to
http://www.FamilyTreeDNA.com.
Enter the kit number and password information in the boxes provided at the
right of the menu bar located at the top of the screen.
This will take you to your personal page. Once here, select the Y-DNA matches
from the left menu. On this screen, right above the section where it lists your
matches, you will see a blue lined box that outlines a paragraph of text. The
title of this paragraph is "Additional possibilities for searching matches." At
the end of the paragraph click on the link titled "Click here to upload to
Ysearch.org."
This will take you to a
Ysearch.org page titled "Create New User," this will
not however, alter the Family Tree Personal page, kit number, or password in
anyway. It will create a new account for
Ysearch.org only.
If you choose to transfer your information to
Ysearch.org, again please note,
that it is a public website and others will be able to view the information you
provide.
On the "Create New User" page you will see the Y-DNA results listed, scrolling
down you will also see spaces to enter various genealogy information. To create
a new account with
Ysearch.org please make sure you enter a contact email
address as well as enter a password for this account.
Once you have filled in this information click the "Save Information" button at
the bottom of the screen. This will then take you to a page where it will give
you your
Ysearch.org user id and show you the password you entered.
The advantage of having your data in Ysearch is that you can compare your data
to any other person in the database.
What I do not like about Ysearch is that you can not calculate the number of
generations-distant probabilities.
ancestry.com :
Anyone can manually load their data to
ancestry.com
Go to
www.ancestry.com and look for the DNA button on the top center of the
page.
Follow their directions.
I encourage all to participate in DNA analysis.
I encourage all to input your FTDNA data info to
Ysearch.org and
ancestry.com.
Thank you,
Best wishes,
William Wyatt

Subject : RE: [CHAPMAN] DNA results
Can DNA results from one testing company be checked against those of another
company?
In other words, there are several testing companies;if I know my haplogroups,
can I tell another Chapman researcher (who sent DNA in to a different company)
what my groups are and compare them to those of the second Chapman researcher?
Do we own our DNA results so that we can share them on the Chapman list or the
Chapman DNA list? Or are the results copyrighted by the testing company?
I'd like to use DNA to disprove the claims by some family members that we are
related to the Johnny Appleseed line. But I don't see that line mentioned on
the Family Search DNA site.
Thanks for any thoughts on this. Pat Pulasky Brown
