Subject: [CHAPMAN-L] Chapman Baptists
Hello List:
I found an interesting mention of Chapmans while browsing the Culpeper
list last
night. It's a petition crafted in 1785 by an early Virginia
Baptist preacher, asking the state government to adopt a more tolerant
position toward emerging religious factions. It's signed by John Chapman
and William Chapman. I believe that's my John married to Jane Donaho. I'm
guessing that William is the son of John Chapman and Mary Allen (of
Withers). I've always wondered if there was a connection between this
William and my John because there were several descendants in my line named
Erasmus - the name of Mary Allen's father, Erasmus Withers Allen - after
the patriarch frontiersman Erasmus Withers, who I believe was Mr. Allens'
maternal grandfather.
Their names on the petition indicates that they were both involved with
the
Baptist revival in Culpeper.
The petition is also signed by Martin Nalle and 3 Strother men - both
names being
tied to my John.
Anybody have any thoughts about the possible link between these two
Chapman
families in Culpeper?
