Hi, All,
A gal wrote the Oneida NY List with Chapman in the subject, though in
the body she was asking about Haggerty and Willard in Oneida. When I
e-mailed her about the Chapman, she replied:

Re Chapman??
Hi Jean,
Orra Haggerty (spelled Hagerty in census) married Rebekah
Chapman and they appear only in the 1830 New Hartford Census. Some
records show she was born in Connecticut while others show New
York. Their oldest son was named Asa Chapman Haggerty.
My records show they had six children between 1817 and
1830. There was a note on Sophia's marriage record that said she was
adopted by Daniel Eells. I don't know if both parents died in the
1830's or if possibly Rebekah remarried. All but Sophia migrated
west to Michigan and Illinois. Barton returned to Oneida County in
1895 where he remarried Mrs Jane Taylor. He died in 1900 in Boonsville.
There was an Asa Chapman living in Oneida County and appears
to the about the same age as Rebekah. I have wondered if this might
be her brother.
There was another sister, Mary Haggerty that married James
Monroe Chapman, son of Levi. Levi was a native of Vermont and moved
to Ohio before Michigan.
One last note. Some of the family papers show Rebekah's
middle name as "Abject". In all my years of research, I have only
found this name one other time.
So far over the years, I have checked in Vermont,
Connecticut and New York for records and have not been able to
connect the dots. That sums up my entire knowledge of the Chapman
connection. Not much for sure! Thanks for your response. Linda Gatewood
Does anyone know of any connections? I know a collateral line of my
Chapmans (Randall) moved from Otsego County to Livingston County and
then to Michigan with his 2 sons after the elder son was discharged
after the Civil War. But so many other people also were moving out
to MI, IL and beyond - always looking to better themselves.
Happy New Year to all!
Jean
