My best effort research shows William Sherman Chapman, born 20 Jun 1810 in Tennessee, as
the son of Samuel Chapman, who unfortunately I have no further information on. I
misspoke earlier: William Sherman married Mehala Tharp, born in 4 Dec 1813 in Kentucky.
One of their sons' married into the Merriss family. William Sherman and Mehala are
both buried in the Merriss Family Cemetery. Their children were James H. (1831-1864);
William R. (1833-?); Margaret J. (1835-?)l Daniel S., my ggf (1837-?); Mary A. (1840-?);
Christopher Columbus (1842-?); John W. (1844-?); Mahlon P. (1848-?); and Sarah E.
(1854-?). William Sherman died 14 Mar 1865, in Scott County, Illinois. The Merriss
Family Cemetery in also in Scott Co. I hope this is of some help.

I am intruiged by your William Sherman Chapman. My Samuel Singleton
Chapman, born in KY in1820, but grew up in TN before moving to MS (Yalobusha Co)
around 1840 had two sons named William, his eldest and his youngest (William
Robert - my greatgrandfather). I suspect, but can't prove, that S.S. was the
son of William Chapman and Nancy Storey. As the eldest of S.S.'s siblings was
born around 1811, this would put the parents about 1790 (+ or - a couple of
years). William Sherman would be of the same generation. Does anyone have
any information on the previous generation?
