I believe this Joseph Chapman may be my ancestor. If so he was in
Charleston, SC, about 1800 and married there Jane Fleming. They had 4
children: Joseph, Sarah, Samuel and Perry. The first two children died
young but the last two sons became pilots in the Charleston harbor and
married two Anderson sisters. I descend from Capt. Samuel.
I suspect the Flemmings / Flemings were also early Newberry families.

Hello Bettye,
do you (or anyone else) by chance happen to know what became of the
Joseph Chapman mentioned here (excerpted from the list of heirs in
your message):
"Moses, Elijah, Elizabeth, William, Joseph, Jacob Chapman Infants of
WILLIAM CHAPMAN dec'd"
I've been searching in vain for a Joseph Chapman that eventually
landed in MS or LA and died circa 1865. He had a child named Andrew
Joseph Chapman born in MS in 1863 (no birth records have been
located).
Thanks,
Corey

Joseph Chapman b 14 June 1740, Fredrick County, VA, d 1816 in Newberry
District SC , was the son of Giles Chapman and Sarah Jackson. He
married 1st
Catherine Anderson and md 2nd Penelope? Some sources say Summers.
In Dec of 1816 Penelope Chapman filed for letters of administration
for the
estate of Joseph Chapman dec'd. which were granted. An inventory
listed the
items of the estate and a sale date set in January. Personal items and
perishables were sold. Buying were nearly all of the children of the
said Joseph
Chapman.
Before his death in 1816 Joseph Chapman, upon the sworn statement of
Marmaduke Coates, had hired him to make a plat of the land ( 85 Acres)
that was his
home. The plat includes details of road that leads to the Court House
that the
house is built upon. The land is centered among neighbors surrounding
the 85
acres. They were: Jacob Chapman, John Coteswell, Sims Brown, George
Crot, Wells
land, Thomas Wilson and James R Wilson.
A Suit Bill for Partition was filed in Equity Court Of Newberry
District,
SC, 08 Jan 1821, by the heirs of Joseph Chapman. They were requesting
that the
land could be sold and the monies divided between the heirs since the
land
could not be divided evenly. The heirs had given the power of attorney
to Jacob
Chapman indicating that they had moved from the District. The
defendant was Thoma
s Wilson.
The heirs listed were:
Jacob Chapman
David Chapman
George Mccullock and his wife Polly (Mary)
Giles Chapman
Amos Chapman
Elijah Lynch and his wife Elizabeth
Moses, Elijah, Elizabeth, William, Joseph, Jacob Chapman Infants of
WILLIAM
CHAPMAN dec'd
John, Elizabeth, Joshua, and Stacy Chapman Infants of Samuel Chapman
dec'd
Susannah Chapman, widow of Samuel Chapman,
Sarah Martin Infant of Joseph Chapman.
Note infant meant underage or child of.
A list of commissioners decided that the land would be sold for $1.75
an
Acre.
February Court term 1822 ordered the land sold. A public sale was
held, 01
April 1822. High bidder was James R Wilson @ $1.95 an Acre on Cannons
Creek the
same which Joseph Chapman died possessing in 1816.
Evidently Penelope Chapman had a life estate in the property and lived
there
until her death probably before 08 Jan 1821 when the Suit Bill was
filed for
distribution to the heirs. Many of the heirs moved to Georgia. Perhaps
they
were granted land warrants for military service in that state as it
opened for
white settlement.
