My husbands Great Grandfather was named Guy Oney Chapman born 13 August 1877
to David R. Chapman and Rosa Anne Spruill. I was wondering since I can't
find any Oney's in the family tree if anyone had any ideas where this name
could have come from. I can take the family back to Tyrell Co. , North
Carolina to 1782 where they migrated to Illinois sometime after 1832 then to
OK and KS.
The 'supposed' 1/2 brother to Johnny Appleseed, Jonathan mothers first name
is Oney but no one in the family has proved even close to being related to
him.
Thank you,
Carolee

Hello there,
I have a Chapman line out of Rankin County, MS. I did visit a small cemetery
near Cato, Rankin County, MS where several of the Chapman family is buried.
In that cemetery, the Chapman name was also spelled as Chapmon. The
following is an exert regarding the Chapman/Chapmon name:
"After tracing the Chapman family tree back six centuries, it is found that
it originated from the Holland Dutch and the name was spelled “Schattman”
and father’s great grandfather had it changed to Chapmon, and sometimes it
is written Chapman"
Anyone on this list ever see the name of Chapman spelled as Chapmon in your
line?
Thank you
Cyndi
