In Fleming County,Ky. there were a lot of CHAPMANS who were
african-Americans. The first on I found was a HENRY CHAPMAN who in July 1830
gave his son DAVID CHAPMAN his freedom.. In August 1833 there was a Will for
HENRY CHAPMAN.
DAVIS CHAPMAN left a Will dated 4 July 1833. He names his wife EASTER &
children DAVID & EZEKIAL.

In February 1852 ALFRED CHAPMAN a free boy of color chose JOHN BRIGHT as his

In April 1860 there was an inventory of the slaves of NELLY MOSS dec'd:
ALBERT CHAPMAN about 21 years old,about 5'8" tall,weighing about 182
pounds,dark color. ANGELINE CHAPMAN,16 years,d/o MISSY CHAPMAN,about 5'
high,and 115 pounds. There is more on this film # 343962 LDS,book k,Fleming

1/10th interest. It refers to Deed book P,pg. 211. He signed by X.
In this same book on page 317 there is a deed dated 24 April 1860 from MARY
POWELL, _______ CHAPMAN,BASIL POWELL,CLARK POWELL,LAURA CHAPMAN,ALFRED

no idea who she was.)
Page 393, 4 August 1855, CLARA CHAPMAN ( colored, to JOHN N.BOWMAN both of
Fleming County. $75.00. She X.
These are not my CHAPMANS. I am researching McCRACKENs in Fleming County and
I do have CHAPMANS in Henry County,so I did take notes on these from Fleming
County. I think it is possible the original owners of these Blacks people
were probably from Virginia. There was a WILLIAM CHAPMAN who was born in
Virginia who died at Fleming County ca. 1809 who may have been the man. Good
Luck, Clyde
