For anything before 1912 you have to either compile it yourself, or hire a
researcher to do so. There are professional researchers who specialize in
the
Civil War records and can do this for you, and do it alot faster than you
could yourself. It took her 1 day to come up with the papers and as soon
as I
got the money to her they were on the way to me. Total cost was $100, but it
was worth every penny>
How about the records filmed by the FHL? Would they contain all the
information? For one of my Revolutionary ancestors (Ezekiel Chapman) I
seemed to get all the info, but for Abner Pier the records had been burned,
so there was only his widow's much, much later application. However, I
obtained a few reports from the MA State Archives, which also cleared up a
mistake in Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the Revolution (they had
him as Abner Pior in one place, though the paper from the Archives had it
spelled correctly). So perhaps it would be good to search State Archives as
well.
Now I'm searching for a Civil War gr-gr-grandfather - have sent off first
for what I can get from NY State and will tackle NARA after I get that
stuff. Hope it doesn't take too many months!!
