Here in the late of the night I will share some things.
I am going to Saluda Court House to get a new copy of the Deed.
It was signed by I think 4-5 Chapmans.
The land was given to Bethel Church by Giles Chapman.
I believe 3 of his children or brothers also signed it as witnesses to the
transaction.
I will make a copy of the deed after I get it, and put it up on the website.
My wife and I plan on going to Saluda to put up plywood on the windows, new
doors if we can afford it, and hopefully enough wood to secure the building.
Then we are going to paint the exterior of the church.
One of the big things we want to do is to transcribe what is on the monument
to the "Giles Chapman family" in the grounds. There are some pictures of it
one the website.
I am trying to learn enough to do the same for some of the older stones
which have become hard to see.
There is a book written by John Chapman about the history of Edgefield
County that I plan on buying while I am there. For those interested the area
around Saluda and Newberry in SC was originally part of Edgefield
County/District before it was split up.
We are also going to Prosperity to hopefully get more pictures of the
Chapman-Summers Ground where the Old Dunkard Meeting House stood that Giles
Chapman once was the Pastor of.
There are many graves at the Prosperity grounds. I really have a huge desire
to get there so that I can see if I can get some more information together.
It is also my understanding some of the other Chapman's are buried in
possibly two other church grounds within a mile of Bethel. Those that
married into another family for instance might be buried at the Baptist or
the Methodist Church up the street.
Please note on the discussion part of the website there are some documents
from the National Convention and State Convention of this church which lists
various Chapman's and even some of the donations they made.
There are some 1500 documents in the SC University Library that the Coleman
Family gave along with some 250 photographs. It is my hope we find some of
the information for both the church and the Chapman family in these records.
I notice that the Blease family is considered part of the Coleman line and
they are buried in the Chapman grounds as a result of marriage. It would
seem logical that I would find records for Chapmans as a result.
I am also going to the Feaster/Coleman reunion for one of the other churches
that was part of this group in two weeks. There is suppose to be a few
knowledge folks on these subjects there.
