My mother who was a Chapman told us the family lore that we were related
to Johnny Appleseed. Not one ounce of truth (or blood) in the tale. My
Chapmans did do some sowing, but it was all "wild oats".

Wow, this is amazing. I grew up in Olean, NY. My ancestors went from
Massachusetts, to Connecticut, then to New York State, on to
Pennsylvania and then back to New York State. All of the generations
from New York and Pennsylvania were very close to each other (Olean is
very close to the PA border). We were always told that we were related
to Johnny Appleseed but I didn't really believe it and haven't gotten to
the point of checking into extended families yet because I'm still
trying to "prove" the original ancestor that came over from England to
Mass in the mid 1600's.
I wonder how they got this information. If it is true, then I guess
there probably is some truth in our family's claims.
