Marilee,
If this helps you, my CHAPMAN family lore--was also we were related to
Johnny Appleseed Chapman.
But his Chapman line and mine were two entirely different lines, so I
was unable to make the
connection.
It wasn't until later, when I discovered by accident, we are related to
Johnny Appleseed Chapman
through our SMITH line.
Keep Johnny's lineage handy and you might find your connection yet !
I agree, I wonder how my Smith's (who married a Chapman) knew they were
related to Johnny Appleseed ????

Wow, this is amazing. I grew up in Olean, NY. My ancestors went from
Massachusetts, to Connecticut, then to New York State, on to Pennsylvania and then back to
New York State. All of the generations from New York and Pennsylvania were very close to
each other (Olean is very close to the PA border). We were always told that we were
related to Johnny Appleseed but I didn't really believe it and haven't gotten to
the point of checking into extended families yet because I'm still trying to
"prove" the original ancestor that came over from England to Mass in the mid
1600's.
I wonder how they got this information. If it is true, then I guess there probably is
some truth in our family's claims.
