Pat, thanks for posting this!
It's been sitting in my inbox since June, finally I got around to trying it
and found my g-grandmother's maiden name (Dorsey). I've had her first name
(Jane) forever but had basically given up any hope of finding anything more
about her. I've also found and confirmed several more names and dates.
Wonderful resource for those of us from CA.

Subject: [CHAPMAN-L] CA & TX vital records
Chapman researchers for California & Texas families:
Rootsweb now has 20th century birth and death records ONLINE for
California and Texas. The states differ somewhat in what they offer. For
instance, California birth records includes mother's maiden name, but is
omitted in Texas. California death records also include social security
number. I haven't checked them out thoroughly, as I'm not researching in
these states, but I believe they can be helpful. Actually, I have a few
qualms about how much is available in these online records, but I
realize all this is available in the county clerk's office.
These timeframes are now available online:
CALIFORNIA:
Births (1905-1995):

Deaths (1940-1997):

TEXAS:
The following vital records are online: Births: 1926 - 1995;
Marriages: 1966 - 1997; Divorces: 1968 - 1997; Deaths: 1964 - 1998
