I know the question asked was about the US Federal Census, but it should also be mentioned
that many, if not all, of the states have performed their own census. These state
censuses didn't necessarily occur on a regular basis. For instance, Mississippi
performed a state census in 1818, 1820, 1822, 1823, 1824, 1825, 1830, 1837, 1841, 1845,
1853 and 1866. So don't forget to check for a state census if you're having
trouble finding someone in the Federal census.

Nan,
The first US Federal Census was in 1790. One has been done every 10 years
since. However, because of a fire, there is no US Federal Census for 1890
(some cities/counties kept those records as well but they are VERY few). There
have been a total of 22 censuses that have been taken. We have access to
them up through 1930. They are released to the public 70 years after they were
taken for privacy. The next set, 1940's census, will be legally released in
2010.
