Edgar, so far all my CHAPMAN family stayed in and around Batesburg or Saluda
County South Carolina except for my grandmother Lula Rebecca Chapman who
married Oliver Allen Puckett. They both died in Augusta, Georgia. I can
give you the run down on the CHAPMAN line if you want. There is a Helen
Dasher that has the CHAPMAN line I think that is your Samuel. I will see if
I can get in touch with her.

Subject: Chapmans of Augusta GA and Charleston, SC - Re: [CHAPMAN-L]
Re:CHAPMAN-D Digest V03 #180
Although I do not recognize your Chapman names, your mention of their
being
in Augusta, GA, in the mid 1800s caught my attention, and prompts me
to
write this message..
I have three, or possibly, four relatives, born in Charleston SC, sons and
a
daughter of Capt. Samuel Chapman and his wife, Sarah Anderson, who
left
there to settle in Augusta, GA. One was my great grandfather, George
Washington <<Wash>> Chapman, born in 1854, who married Ellen Cashin in
Augusta in 1881. He was apprenticed as a tinner or plumber, but became an
accomplished musician and artist. I have his family well documented.
The other was his brother, Thomas Livington Chapman, born in 1850, who
married Ellen Kearney in 1874, probably in Augusta. He was also a plumber.
I
have not been able to find much on this brother, except that a
family
document says that he had 3 children.
The third brother was William Capers Chapman, born in 1844, who married in
Charleston in 1870, Mary Hannah Trout. He was said to be a geologist.
William died in 1917 in Grovetown, Ga, where he had retired.
To my knowlege, William Capers and Mary Trout Chapman had no children of
their own. However, they did adopted a girl who married Arthur C. Wade and
had 4 children - Sarah, Mary, Author, and Richard Wade.
From an entry in a census for Augusta, it appears that the brothers'
sister,
Mary Jane Chapman Doar, also may have come to Augusta to live.
Capt. Samuel Chapman was a son of Joseph and Jane [Fleming] Chapman.
Joseph
and Jane had 4 children of record - Sarah, Joseph, Samuel and Perry
Emmanuel
Chapman. The similarity of these names - except for the last - to the
Giles
Chapman family of Newberry, SC, has prompted me to believe that
Joseph was
one of the several Joseph Chapmans of this family. The fourth child, Capt.
Perry Chapman, appears to have been named for a friend of his father and
mother.
The other children of Capt. Samuel and Sarah Chapman were - Samuel Jr,
Joseph Perry, James Foster, Julia Catherine, Sarah Cornelia, Emily Valery
and Julia V. Chapman. Descendants of some of these children still live in
the Charleston area.
