Hi Jennifer,
I wanted to let you know that I have riverboat men in my Chapman line. Though they lived
in Knox and Roane county TN, I know they were on the TN, MS and OH Rivers.
My brickwall ancestor on this line was Francis A Chapman b. about 1814 Knox county TN. I
suspect his father was Asahel Chapman b.1780 North Carolina but this connection is not
proven by me or anyone else that I have been in contact with over the past couple of
years. (If anyone has proof, I sure would like to hear from you) Francis (nickname BERRY)
A. Chapman is found on the TN River with the James King and Company in the 1830's
piloting the East Tennesean. Captain Chapman is also mention in a couple of other books
which i can't remember the names of off the top of my head. He was a Unionist and
during the civil war, he rounded up a group of Rebels who were planning destruction around
Kingston TN. i can provide more details if you like.
If you are willing, could you share what you have found on the Captain Chapman you
mention?
BTW- Berry Chapman also had two sons who followed him on the river- Gilbert Randolph
b.1860 and Thomas Willis b.1868.
I know it is not much but you never know where these river rats went.

Subject: [CHAPMAN] Steamboat Captain Chapman, Underground Railroad, Ohio
Does anyone have any information about a steamboat captain by the name of
Chapman who had routes from Ohio to Buffalo, NY and might have been a part of
the Underground Railroad? His story is recounted in a book by Pettit called
"Sketches in the History of the Underground Railroad" (pgs. 42-43) but I
don't
have a copy of the book. I believe the Chapman's shipping business traveled the
Ohio River from Cincinnatti through Pittsburgh.
I recently found out that Ripley, Ohio was a key crossing in the underground
railroad and there were many Chapmans from the same parent family in the area,
many were burried at Pisgah Ridge Cemetery. They may have had abolitionist
sentiments and communicated with the Rev. John Rankin.
My information is still in its infancy so any feedback anyone could offer would
be appreciated!
