Pat,
I am so glad to hear from you. My gggrandfather was John Chapman born around the 1790 era
in PA. His family moved to Ohio when John was young. John's father was a William
Chapman but I cannot find anything about him. He may be related to one of the
Chapman's that you mentioned. I read a book on Johnny Appleseed which mentioned all
of the names you brought up. The information on my family was passed down by word of
mouth and my ggrandfather, William Chapman, knew Johnny Appleseed as Uncle Johnny. In
fact, my ggrandfather, John Chapman and Johnny Appleseed are buried next to each other in
Ft. Wayne, Indiana. I have not been able to find that direct link from my family to
Johnny Appleseed. My ggrandfather, William, was born in 1830 in Ohio but the family moved
to Allen Co., Indiana. William was married twice, with the first wife dying giving birth
to William, JR around 1857. Upon marrying again, the couple move to Winamac, Indiana.
Their first
child, b.1861, was John Chapman who was my grandfather. My dad, William, was born in
1911 in Marshall Co., Indiana. I am wondering if any of this family info. ties to your
family?
Harold Chapman

Origins: Ireland, ca 1740. To the
colonies: Thomas Chapman, with adult sons George and
William; also daughter Lucy Chapman Lemen. Most likely
accompanied by members of Mercer and Lemen families. Settled
first in Marcus Hook, PA.where George stayed (wife Mary, son
Gilead). William Chapman (wife, Elizabeth Cullen) and
sister Lucy Chapman Lemen families settled in Frederick
County, PA.
George died in Marcus Hook 1757; William died prior to 1757
in Frederick County; Date of Lucy's death is unknown.
William Chapman and Elizabeth Cullen's children, probably
all born in Frederick Co: Jean or Jane, ca 1745; George,
ca 1747; John, ca 1749; Joseph,ca 1750; Thomas, ca 1752;
William, ca 1754.
George, son of William and Elizabeth, moved their family
to VA/WV northern panhandle (Brooke/Hancock County) 1780s
where George died in
1812. Believe that John, his brother, moved to SW PA
(Washington County) where he died in 1790. (John Chapman's
place of death was Hopewell Township in Washington County.
Hopewell Township at a later date became part of Beaver
County, PA.)
Did Joseph, Thomas and William stay in Frederick County, or
migrate along with their brothers to the new areas in the
WV/SW PA area?
Washington Co, PA has on their tax lists and early census
the following Chapmans: James, Thomas and John. And, of
course, George is definitely in Brooke/Hancock County,
VA/WV, which borders on SW PA.
Happy to share what I have on these families and would
appreciate any little scraps of info anyone else might
have. Pat Pulasky Brown
