Have you checked the Chapman Family Association web? It has lots of info on
it about different Chapman's.

I had the same thought - that they might have been loyalists. I checked
the Chapmans on the list of United Empire Loyalists in the directory of
the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada and found only John
and Nathan.

That doesn't prove they weren't loyalists. The only fellows listed in
the directory will be people whose descendants joined the organization
(kind of a Loyalist version of the DAR).
Look for their descendants on Canadian census returns (
Ancestry.com has
Canadian census returns, but there might also be some free sources -
Canada is very good about making archives available online).
Good Luck

Art,
Sounds like your Gerard may have been a loyalist if he remained with the
official
church. It might also explain why he would move to Canada right
after the close of the Revolution.
Most "dissenters" from the Church of England were sympathetic to the
Revolution.
Just a thought.

strange request with no reference points to who this is addressed to.
However, I made an ocvious mustake about Gerard Chapma. He immigrated
to Canada
(to the Montreal area) in the late 1790s (NOT the late 1890s) from
Vermont. His two sons were Orlando and Chester (names that were repeated
in later generations). He was a member of the Church of England (Anglican).
