Yes our own family considered that we were descended from UEL's though unfortunately
they were not officially noted.

I had the same thought - that they might have been loyalists. I checked
the Chapmans on the list of United Empire Loyalists in the directory of
the United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada and found only John
and Nathan.

That doesn't prove they weren't loyalists. The only fellows listed in
the directory will be people whose descendants joined the organization
(kind of a Loyalist version of the DAR).
Look for their descendants on Canadian census returns (
Ancestry.com has
Canadian census returns, but there might also be some free sources -
Canada is very good about making archives available online).
