Correct. He had me believing for years that my 4x great-grandfather Aaron
Chapman went back to William. It took a lot of research (all in the old
Chapman Chatter) by Phil Chapman Ellsworth to prove that that line goes to
Edward of Ipswich. The problem is partly because there were 2 Joseph
Chapmans in Colchester CT at the same period, one from each line.

If I was too outspoken I apologize to you, Ms. Sellana Belle and the
rest of the forum . I did not mean it the way it seems in retrospect to
sound, but was trying to make a point that is useful to have the
sources to know where to start.. There are apparently a lot of good
line items in the subject message, but to follow up on these will take
quite some time without knowing where to go for the background
information.
Be assured that this is an excellent message forum, well managed, and
useful to all that use it.
Thanks for your message of correction. So again my apologizes to all.

The F.W. Chapman Book is "THE CHAPMAN FAMILY: or the DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT

It is available in several Library collections around the country. My great

by the way, was originally owned by William Durand (Will)who was apparently
a descendant of Robert's sister. It is very interesting, but not always
accurate (I'm told). It is indexed

Do you have any Willards in your line? I am trying to locate a Willard

I have also received all of the messages, and Maureen is correct that not
much has been going on. It has been awhile since I've received any
Chapman-related mail.
To any one descendant from the Robert Chapman of Saybrook line -- I have
had the most amazing experience. After a three-year genealogy journey, I was
able to meet with a distant cousin who had old photographs and letters
written to and from Robert Chapman's 5th great-granddaughter, Mary Ellen
Chapman, and her husband, William Orr who died in Marietta, Georgia during
the Battle of Atlanta for the 15th Michigan Regiment. William was shot in
the knee on July 28, 1864 in the Battle of Ezra Church and wrote to his wife
prior to succumbing to gangrene on August 8, 1864. Included among the
letters is one from Mary Ellen to William dated August 14, 1864 that was
returned to her unopened because William was already dead. The letter was
heart-wrenching as it discusses learning he was seriously wounded by reading
his name in a Detroit newspaper. She talks above her children crying ("ma,
pa said the rebels would not shoot him and now they have") and little
Georgie not wanting to
play because he feared his father was dead. And her joy at getting his
letter and knowing he was alive. And all this time -- their pa was dead and
they just had not received the news yet.
I finally have some pictures of Mary Ellen, including one taken of her
when she was 99 years old (she was born in 1835 and died in 1935 so there is
some good DNA going around in the Robert Chapman line). I have portraits of
her parents, Reuben Chapman and Polly Merrifield (alternate spelling
Merryfield).
Is anyone else out there related to the Reuben Chapman line from Robert?
If so, I would love to hear from you.

Paula, I found your message very interesting. How fortunate you are to have
found those letters. Also your comment re: the Chapman genes. I did look
your Mary Ellen up in the FW Chapman book and found her listed under Reuben
and his wife, whose name was listed as "Polly Merefield". At any rate, I
agree with you about the family genes. My great grandmother, Clara
Elizabeth Crofoot Adams was 99 1/2 when she died in Sept. 1975 and her
grandfather, Sylvester Marsh Chapman was 91 when he died in 1903. The good
genes are there as long as we take reasonable care of our own health!
Pat
Yes, I received the messages too, again and again and again! Of the 10
messages in the Digest form I receive, only the original message and two
others did not have every darned piece of writing in the digest over and
over again.
This particular bit of netiquette is really easy. Please, when you reply,
don't just hit the Reply button and write your message. See what it shows.
It's so easy to highlight and CUT all but the original bit you are replying
to. It will take you less than one minute, so the recipients won't receive
every darned word over and over again. Thanks!
I clicked Reply, but highlighted and cut the entire Digest since I'm not
replying to a particular one, just grousing. Sorry!

I have a brickwall concerning one John Chapman, born abt 1850 in either Texas or Louisiana and died abt 1896 in Grapeland, Houston County, Texas. He married Sarah Ann Denson and they had abt 7 children (staring in 1875), one being my great grandfather Lewis (or Louis) Chapman (b. 1891). John Chapman appeared in the 1870 and 1880 census with his wife Sarah.
Can any one help me with who his parents or siblings were and anything else? I have been stuck here for so long...
Thanks so much,
Lisa in Texas
