Hello List,
While the subject is Chapman's in Onondaga County I'd like to submit my
Chapman's:
*John R. Chapman b. abt 1809 NY according to census records in Manlius and
Fayetteville, NY. John died sometime between 1871 & 1879. Was in the 1870
Fayettville census. Early census and land records indicate John R. may have been
related to a William CHAPMAN but of course nothing proven.
John married Sophronia Huntley b. abt 1816 Manlius, Onondada, NY.
Sophronia died sometime between 1871 & 1879 also last seen in the 1870
Fayetteville census with husband John R. and son Eugene. Sophronia Huntley had a
brother Lyman Huntley b. 1816 (they may have been twins)
that married Louisa M. Chapman b. 1820 d/o Moses & Hannah Dixon CHAPMAN of
Dewitt. Moses Chapman was born in CT. 1790.
Known issue to the marriage of John R. and Sophronia CHAPMAN:
1. Celestia Chapman b. abt Aug. 1834 Manlius/Fayetteville. Married Leonard
Furbeck and moved out of NY.
2. *Adelbert Chapman b. Sept. 1844 Manlius/Fayetteville. Married Sarah Ellen
Morey 1868
Canastota, Madison, NY. Adelbert died 1931 in Syracuse and is buried in
Fayetteville Cem as a Civil War Vet.
3. Eugene Chapman b. abt 1847 Manlius/Fayetteville. I know nothing further
for Eugene
None of these children's names are associated with the Huntley name. I have
found two other Celestia's, one the d/o Farnham CHAPMAN of Onondaga County.
Adelbert and Eugene are used in the Chapman lines but I am unable to connect
their father John R. Chapman to any particular line.
Thank You!
Karen in FL
I would like to insert another Chapman name in New York that is my brickwall. Wilson E. Chapman, b. circa 1811 perhaps in New York. I do not have proof that he was born in New York, only assume that due to the facts about his wife's family. He probably married his wife, Lucy Mosher, in New York. She was supposed to have been born in New York circa 1819. She was the daughter of Peter Mosher and Mary Birch who were in the Oswego and Cayuga Counties between 1820 and 1832. Peter and Mary appear in the 1840 census records of Delaware County, Ohio, as do Wilson and Lucy Chapman with daughter, Charlotte Mariah. Lucy's sister, Lucinda and husband, David Campbell also appear next door in the Ohio census. They all arrived in Whitley County, Indiana by November 16, 1841. Three more children were born to Wilson and Lucy in Indiana-George Wilson, Sanford T, and Martha A. Wilson E. Chapman died in Whitley County, Indiana in 1861.
I would appreciate any help that anyone can give me. Thanks!

Hi Molly,
I'll stick my two cents in here. My ancestor, Samuel Chapman (b. 1780), went from Ashford, CT to Onondaga County (Marcellus) in the early 1800's. You could check the Barbour Collection for Windham County - also check other towns in that area, such as Bolton (Tolland County I think), etc. You might find Ezekiel's birth. I have found the Barbour Collection to be an invaluable resource (followed up by double-checking the town records).
Also, if you know where he was in Onondaga County, you could check with the town and county historians to see if there are any records that mention him, such as a will or land grant. The problem with NY is that many records were destroyed by fire, but sometimes the historian will have resources he/she can check.

Sorry, haven't had my coffee, as yet.......lol
Mistake in last inquiry my Ezekiel D. Chapman had twin sons Clinton &
Cortland (not Cleaveland, he was Clinton's son) and then Clarke Charles 1823.

Jean,
Do you know if anyone has straightened out all the Ezekiel Chapman's and
where they sprang from? lol
I'm still floundering with the origin of mine in Onondaga, NY in 1820. I
know where he went but still not from whence he sprang. B. 4 Jan. 1783
supposedly in NY (not proven) There are several Chapman's in close proximity in the
1820 Census but have not tied them with him. He was m. to a Mary (VanDorn,
unproven) who apparently was the mother of his twin sons Clinton and
Cleveland (1820) and possibly his later son Charles(1823). He married 2nd another
Mary (Bishop) after 1823 in Ohio or Indiana and fathered Emeline(1835 Ohio),
then moved on to Marshall Cnty, Indiana where he died 4 Mar. 1867.

Re John Hills message (copied below)
John, I really don't have any solid information about these Chapmans - just
guesses, but if you know more than I do, I'd love to know what it is and
where it came from. From a family Bible in my possession, Abel Chapman, b
Oct 11,1785, Westfield, Hampshire Co Massachusetts, the son of my
3x-gr-grandfather Ezekiel (of the Edward line) was in Saratoga, and
possibly died in Rensselaer County.
My source for Saratoga is an application by Abel's older brother, Zenas (my
ancestor), for what remained of Ezekiel's Revolutionary Pension after their
mother Jerusha d in 1839. It stated that Abel was in Saratoga at that time.
Then I'd found from Gil Alford's State Data (at one of the CFA Conventions)
that there was an Abel Chapman buried in Rensselaer County. I wondered if
he might be Zenas' brother, as the age was correct. Later on I found the
following info on line:
Abel Chapman, d July 16 1842 at 57 years, wife Rachael. Hoosick, d Apr 4
1863, 77 yrs, wife of Abel; both buried in Maple Grove (old) Cemetery.
Census records show the following:
1820 Census Aber [sic] 35 yrs - Charlton, Saratoga, (p 214) 2M under 10, 3
F under 10, 2 F 10-16, wife 26-45. In manufacture (a blacksmith, like his
father and Zenas?).
1830 Census Abel 45 yrs - Stillwater, Saratoga [p 138] 1M under 5; 1M
10-15; 1M 15-20; 1F under 5; 1 F10-15; 2F 15-20; 1F 20-30, Wife 40-50.
However, I haven't tried to search either Saratoga or Rensselaer records
for deeds, wills, church records or anything that might actually tie this
Abel to my family line, though they seem to be hot clues. I'm guessing that
if the Abel buried in Rensselaer is "my" Abel, he and his wife might have
followed a child down there, but I have no names to follow up.
Dang these Chapmans from different lines that settled in the same place
(and even intermarried, making it even more complicated!) But if anyone
has any info or even guesses, I'd love to know!
And, John, I don't have any info about the Robert Chapman line, as it's not
mine. I had enough trouble separating my line from Wm of New London (F.W.
Chapman's mistake in his book, which Phil Chapman Ellsworth straightened
out, fortunately). I felt a bit sad at having to let him go, since I lived
on Long Island for 40 years and could almost wave to him. VBG But Dad had
always said we were related to Johnny Appleseed, which wasn't possible from
William's line, so it wasn't a big struggle to shift gears.
Cheers! Jean

George-
The Revolutionary War records of Benjamin Chapman report that he moved to
Carlton, Saratoga Co, NY from Salem, Westchester Co., NY. There are also
Saratoga county records identifying Benjamin as the same man as Capt
Benjamin from Westchester Co. The DAR records for Benjamin of Carlton,
Daniel of llinois and John Chapman of Hoosick all identify these men as
serving in the Westchester Militia. You can find these individuals in the
various records of men, along with Isreal, who served in the NY
Revolutionary forces.
There is no question that Benjamin and Isreal Chapman of Carlton, Saratoga
Co, NY are the same men as the men of the same name from Salem, Westchester
Co NY and the Church of Christ records.
However, there is a clear issue about their antecedents. Neither of them
seem to fit into either Edward Chapman of Ipswich or of Robert Chapman of
Saybrook lines. There are missing links in the Ralph Chapman line of Rhode
Island who does have descendents with clear links to Westchester and to
Rensselaer County. In addition, that line is the only Quaker Chapman line
I could find. I did find members of the Robert Chapman line in Rensselaer
County. Jean Chapman Snow would have more information on them. I did find
later Chapmans in Rensselaer with connections to Edward Chapman of Ipswich.
Hi Art (Wannanbe)
I have an Edward Chester who went by the name Chester all his life. He came from Maine and his direct line was from England to Ipswich Mass to Maine, then he (Chester) came to Northern NH where he died.
None of the other names however.

Subject: [CHAPMAN] Re: CHAPMAN-D Digest V05 #91
Hi John,
Thanks for responding to my Query about Timothy Chapman, and your
suggestions of other areas to search.
The Benjamin and Israel that I have been concentrating on, are the sixth
generation of Edward Chapman, b: 1612 in England.
Benjamin Chapman Jr. b: 1760, Ipswich, MA,
Israel Chapman, b: 1761, Ipswich, MA.
Children of Benjamin Chapman Sr. b; 1738, Ipswich, MA and
Elizabeth Gould, b: 1719, Eastham, MA.
The brothers, Benjamin and Israel, who served in the Westchester County,
NY militia, sound like they could be likely candidates as being ancestors of
Timothy.
The Church of Christ records, that you refer to as Israel Chapman being the
oldest Chapman in the area, who’s wife was Martha, sounds like another likely
candidate.
I will pursue the suggestions you have made and keep in touch with you with
any information that I may have or find, that may be of interest to you.
I really appreciate your help.
George

Hi John,
Thanks for responding to my Query about Timothy Chapman, and your
suggestions of other areas to search.
George
My husband would dearly love me to trace his family line. His grandfather was John SMITH married to
his grandmother Annie CHAPMAN. So far I have discovered.
1901 Census yielded information John SMITH b. Chelsea, England and Annie shown as wife b. Lugwardine,
Herefordshire, England. They are shown with two children Kathleen Annie 5 and Harold John 4 both
born Richmond, Surrey. Harold John my husband's father, who birth certificate shows mother as
ANNIE CHAPMAN.
1891 Census shows John SMITH assistant butcher visiting with a family who are all butchers.
Census shows Annie CHAPMAN as servant but married.
I have to find when Annie married someone called CHAPMAN.
There are two Ann/Annies born around birthdate in Lugwardine Herefordshire
One Annie MORETON. b. 1866 [seems to be exact age as shown on all census forms]
the other Annie WYCHERRLEY.
Would anyone have a CHAPMAN married to an Ann or Annie from Herefordshire, England.
A big ask I know but sometimes in genealogy we do get a miracle breakthrough.
Any help appreciated.

George-
Benjamin and Isreal Chapman show among a group of Chapmans who served in the Westchester County NY militia during the American Revolution. Benjamin was Captain in Thaddeus Crane's Regiment (NY In The Revolution and New York As Colony and State) . Other Chapmans listed as having served in the Westchester militia include Daniel, Stephen and John. John Chapman, btw, is my 5 xggrandfather. There have been a number of suggestions that these men are related and possibly as brothers. Isreal, whom you mentioned, is also suggested as a possible brother to Benjamin. My line of Chapmans has Benjamin, Stephen and other given names in common with both Capt Benjamin and Stephen Chapman.
It is of more than passing interest that Stephen b 1746, Isreal b 1748 and Benjamin b 1753 all ended in Saratoga county. My John Chapman b 1762-1764 settled across the Hudson from Saratoga county in Rensselaer county. Westchester County also has records of a Lois b 1740, Anne b 1744 and a Martha wife of Isreal.
Various records of Capt Benjamin show in Westchester Co NY records. There are records of the baptism of his children in Church of Christ Salem, Westchester County (NY G & B Vol 31-33). Benjamin is infamous for having foreclosed on the Episcopal church in Salem which was unable to pay his contractor fees- this is the famous Church Inn of Salem.
There are extensive records of Stephen and his wife Sarah Ferris, readily available on the internet.
There is a DAR chapter named for Daniel Chapman in Illinois. He served a number of terms in the Westchester militia and was also in the Continental Army. There are a number of available genealogies and other records for him. He claims to have been born in North Bedford, Westchester county rather than in Salem.
There is a nine generation genealogy available on the descendents of John Chapman of Hoosick Rensselaer county, NY. I've posted John's will and those of several of his children on the NYgenweb for Rensselaer county. There are no records of John in the Church of Christ register. None of our family records go back before 1764, including his DAR record.
I have not found anything to date on Isreal of Saratoga county. But he is clearly not the Isreal with wife Martha (Sears) Chapman in the common cemetery at Little Compton, RI. That Isreal shows in the Vital Records of Rhode Island as having been lost at sea. His wife shows as having died 14 Oct 1763. Along with her are buried a probable daughter Edith d 29 Sept 1759 and a probable son George d 10 Dec 1759 age 5.
However, all these Chapmans seem to arise spontaneously in Westchester county and there have been no records found to prove any relationship between them. The Church of Christ records and cemetery records seem to indicate the oldest Chapman in the area was an Isreal who had a wife Martha. some of the records giving marriage dates would seem to indicate - due to period of time involved- more than one Chapman family in my opinion- others disagree.
My own research would seem to indicate the Westchester Chapmans connect in some unknown way to Ralph Chapman of Rhode Island. This is one of the very few Quaker Chapman families. There are a number of Chapmans from that line who show up in the Westchester environs- From John Chapman's THE CHAPMAN GENEALOGY FHC 089641 Item 4 Call # 929.273 c 366.
Isaac Chapman of Southeast (Dutchess Co) married 1742/43 Judith Thatcher and 2 Priscilla Sears. Isaac is buried in the Sears cemetery in Southeast.
Isaac's brother Enoch also shows in Southeast. Even more intriguing his son Isaac was born in 1783 in Pittstown, Ny and died 30 July 1853 in West Troy. I guesstimate that my John Chapman was in Pittstown by 1785. John clearly shows in the 1790 census there. He married into a Quaker family at a time when only Quakers could marry Quakers.
Frank Doherty's Book Settlers of the Beekman Patent suggests a different Chapman family connection. I would also point out that there are records of a John Chapman in nearby Fairfield Conn who is clearly connected to the Robert Chapman family of Saybrook. There were numerous Chapman families at very early dates in that part of the country.
So far no one has found a definitive record out of Westchester county that describes the ancestry of all these various individuals. There are a number of Westchester county Chapman researchers.
Perhaps you can locate the solution to the puzzle.

Subject: [CHAPMAN] Re: CHAPMAN, HILLER, BAILEY, BARKER, PLATT
Hi All,
Need help finding the parents/ancestors of my GG Grandfather Timothy
CHAPMAN.
Timothy was born Sept. 26, 1789 in unknown, and lived in Charlton, Saratoga
County, NY. in 1817.
Timothy died in Charlton, Saratoga County on Aug. 29, 1838 and is buried in
the Pine Grove Cemetery there.
Timothy married Sarah HILLER, the girl next door, daughter of Summers and
Betsey (BAILEY) HILLER on Feb. 6, 1817 at the First Presbyterian Church at
Ballston Center, Saratoga County, NY.
Timothy and Sarah had two children:
Summers CHAPMAN: B: Jan. 28, 1818. D: Aug 18, 1818.
Henry PLATT CHAPMAN. B: Feb 28, 1819. D: Oct. 27, 1885 in
Elkhart, Ind.
I have a transcribed copy of a deed when Timothy bought property from
an Israel and Sarah CHAPMAN on June 11, 1817, in Charlton, Saratoga County,
NY.
I believe that Israel first wife's maiden name was PLATT.
I also believe that Israel's second wife's maiden name was BARKER.
A Benjamin CHAPMAN, previously owned property next to the property that
Timothy bought. Benjamin and Israel CHAPMAN both resided in Charlton, Saratoga
County, NY. in 1817.
I am trying to establish the relationship of Israel and Benjamin CHAPMAN to
Timothy and believe that Israel Chapman is Timothy's father.
Sarah (Hiller) CHAPMAN and her son, Henry Platt CHAPMAN, migrated to
Elkhart Indiana with the her HILLER family after Timothy's death.
Any help would be appreciated in determining the parents of Timothy.

Hello, all.
At the risk of being considered a poor research person, I am asking for the following info.
What are the names of the parents of William Jefferson EADS?? His wife was Dora MARTIN, and in 1903, their daughter, Martha, was b. in Mecklenburg Co., NC.
Also, who were the parents of Dora MARTIN??
Martha married James Fred CHAPMAN, Sr., in ca, 1920, and they had several children. One son was James Fred, Jr., also known as Bill.
Bill was b. 9-16-1925 in Gastonia, Gaston Co., NC.
He married Betty Jo BALLARD, on 3-19-1965, after a tour of duty in the military, during the WWII times. They settled in Harris Co., TX, soon after the marriage.
In attempting to structure a family tree for the living son of Bill and Betty Jo, I am seeking any assistance I can find, to locate the names, dates and places of importance in the lives of his ancestors.
Any help is appreciated. Joe DUKE
