Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I added some rather neat information on the evolving Bethel Church gallery.
I hope to add a lot more in the days to come. Some more records and letters
will be added tonight and some of them will be reproduced for adobe reader
as well.
There is the Universalist Convention "personal record" including places he
served, education, parents etc.
The record includes places he served, education, parents etc.

Yep, that's where I ended up.
One time, I had my laptop with me, and I was showing mom how I entered
things. She gave me some info then...and I furiously typed. But after
that, she resented the computer being there. Don't know why, but she
didn't want me to use it, and I ended up having to wait till she was in
bed! Funny how people are sometimes.

Have youb put these names on any of the other surname lists? These names

Here is a list of those at Chapman-Summers Burial Ground near Prosperity
SC. The Bethel Church (Saluda) and the Prosperity Church (Old Dunkard
Meeting House Grounds) are a few miles from one another.
They are from they same family line-Giles Chapman.
I have spent much energy finding out information on these families and
their history.
Please feel free to contact me about any of it. Especially if you would
like to help preserve this history.

Rev. Neil,
Some of us "Old Timers" have deeply appreciated
the good work you've done and are doing, and the data on Bethel
Church. ----- This is not my line, unless by some
miracle, my Chapman line could have been related to
Giles Chapman Sr. who first showed up in Frederick Co.
Virginia. --------- There are many descendants of Giles Sr. line
on this list.

I have information on three burial grounds that are Chapman grounds.
Based upon the moderators note I think it would be respectful for me to
take this off the list.
If you would like information on these burial grounds, the families that
are connected to them, or other interesting things like the 250 pictures
and 1400 documents the Coleman family has donated to preserving this
history please feel free to contact me.
The burial grounds I have gathered information on date from the 1700's til
1961.

Please forgive me for being a bit of a pain but what do you mean by CC?
Next please let me explain something.
When I did this post I had to write it for about 1000 emails of which
three were for historic lists.
This church and its burial grounds are dominated by Chapman History. A
history that has been buried by many and for way to long of time.
It was founded by a Chapman Family, its roots are in an important Chapman
family from Virgina and England. It's Pastors were either married into or
heavily connected to the Chapmans. 3 if not more were actually Chapmans
-Giles, John, Thomas....maybe more!
John Chapman and Thomas Chapman wrote heavily on the history of this
county which a large part of it was about you guess it, The Chapmans.
The burial ground which is listed on the Chapman Family Association
website has some of the interesting Chapman family members buried in it.
This paticular group of Chapmans is also interesting to many because it is
connected by marriage to a few important figures including a govenor of
this state, and another figure who signed the declaration of Independence
for the state of SC.
One can trace some of the more interesting figures in this paticular group
to several important figures and other signifigant events.
It tears at me that when I did the reunion for this church none of the
decendants (except 1 of the Blease side of Chapman, and 1 of the Werts)
attended the meeting. The Blease family has had to maintain the burial
grounds of the Chapman grounds for the last 40 years. None of the Chapmans
have so much said thank you.
My family which is not even close to any of those buried here were sick to
our stomach that any group of families could let land, church, and burial
grounds fall into such ruins.
Maybe the manner in which I discussed things in the letter is wrong for a
list that discuss Genelogy but frankly I hope my decendants think higher
of my church, my home, and my life than what has happened to a group of
people who I marvel at their energy and dedication to their faith and
their lives.
Thomas Chapman served his faith riding thousands of miles by horse back
when he was a circuit preacher. He did so till he was in his 70's.
When I read about Chapman decendants from his line and from his father and
grand father and see them discussing who is who it bothers me that so
little care about their lives and their work.
Maybe I am venting but if you read what I have read about these folks and
then step foot into this church and realize how wrong it is to dismiss
this as being off topic I am concerned about the understanding of what
Genelogy is. It is not just names. It is lives....
My apologies to anybody I may have offended.

Look for the State, and then County.
If this is a pioneer cemetery (less than 6 burials recent) some states
(Iowa does) have a ruling that the pioneer cemeteries must be kept up, and
made accessible to the public. There are usually state/county
organizations that see to it that cemeteries that are in danger be
saved/helped.
I suggested the County website, because many, many people go there in
search of ancestry. It would put the plight of the church and cemetery
before the public on a wider scale than posting to any one mailing
list. It was meant to be a helpful suggestion.

I had sent for Elisha Chapman's CW files before they raised the
prices. Even without a researcher, I got some things that I was elated with:
Copy of marriage license
affidavits from others regarding his health before during and after the war
Plus some other things.
Either way, it pays to send for the information!

Dear Friends,
I am hoping that you will send this to others who may be interested in
helping or might know of somebody who would be willing to seek help for this
effort. I am seeking assistance on two fronts. The first with our efforts
with Bethel Church as well as we would like to gather as much historic
information as we can on this church as well as the other SC Universalist
Convention Church's. That includes D.B. Clayton Memorial near Newberry SC,
Bethel Church near Saluda SC, Liberty Church of Feasterville SC.
The historic information we are looking for is records, family Genealogy
information, church & individual references, books by the ministers or
members of the churches in question, and information the church history as
it was recorded in State Convention Records, Legal Records, and
Denominational Records.
Next as some of you may know my family is involved in efforts to make the
Bethel Church property outside of Saluda SC into an "Intentional Community"
& Retreat Center. We have been actively seeking the children and other
descendants of the church congregation and having met with close to 30 of
them a few months back to re-establish the congregation's membership roll.
The church has not been used since 1960. It sits on a few acres in a wooded
section that is mainly a rural area. The church has a very interesting
history; most likely being connected to both the Prosperity Church, and
Liberty Church. It should be noted that the Universalist Churches were most
likely of Dunkard roots with possibly Swish, Dutch influence. There was also
some small influences from the Quaker faith as well. Many believe that the
Liberty Church congregation might have been the earliest Universalist
congregation in the south maybe in the USA.
We know the Bethel church can trace its roots back to the John Chapman
Family who was brothers to Giles Chapman. The Chapman family was a very long
standing Universalist family that can trace its roots back to Virginia, and
England. It was interestingly to note that the Chapmans had possibly a
influence on Universalism from 1700's into the 1960's. The church was served
by the likes of D.B Clayton, Thomas Chapman, Burress (Universalist Herald
Editor) and many other interesting souls.
We have recently begun efforts to bring new life to the SC's Historic
Universalist Churches. There is not much support for such efforts. But we
believe there are a few who care both about the history and want help bring
a brighter future to this State Convention.
If you know of an individual, church or organization that might be
interested in helping please forward this email on and contact us soon. I
will be glad to share any information I have or receive. We have been very
fortunate to have gathered some interesting information.
Please pass this onto your congregation, state organization, or maybe to a
friend who has an interest in this history or our common faith.
If you like to follow this effort and would like to know more about the
history of the church or those connected to it please feel free to contact
me.

This does not apply to those who served in the Confederacy. At least I
couldn't find a place to order the record. I think someone told me to
try St. Louis? Do you have information on the Confederacy civil war
records?
Half of the family served for the South, half for the North.
I hired a researcher who went to the National Archives and pulled every
piece of paper regarding my person. The info in St. Louis is compiled records.
For anything before 1912 you have to either compile it yourself, or hire a
researcher to do so. There are professional researchers who specialize in the
Civil War records and can do this for you, and do it alot faster than you
could yourself. It took her 1 day to come up with the papers and as soon as I
got the money to her they were on the way to me. Total cost was $100, but it
was worth every penny.

Chapman kin,
Planning a trip to the DC Archives in a few weeks, I'm considering
purchasing one of the genealogy packages, such as Ancestry.com,
Genealogy.com, etc. If any of you have had particularly good (or bad)
experiences with any such packages, please email me directly:

Thanks.
